About the Author
Marta White was born just after World War II and was deeply affected by her parents’ experiences after the war and during the Depression. She is a child of Jewish intellectuals and was brought up in the Bronx, New York. Her art is an exploration into the power of the past lives of found objects as well as the feelings they evoke. The basis of this work is autobiographic, builds on fantasy, memory and symbolism in the tradition of the Dada and surrealist artists of the 1920s. Inspired by artists Roberta Marks and Joseph Cornell, Marta creates boxed environments, assemblage collages, featuring elements of surprise. Unexpected juxtapositions allow her subconscious to express itself, transcend identity and allow for multiple interpretations so that the viewer sees each component in a new light each time a poem is read or a box is viewed. Besides having been an actress and a theater director, Marta has had an eclectic career as an artist, set designer and hotel owner. Within her Gatsby era hotel, she began to see rooms and space as big boxes. The rooms are filled with unique objects and the walls and tables are used to exhibit her work. She now lives in a large scale version of her father’s original doll house, complete with white shingles, green shutters and the mahogany staircase. “My spiritual life, my journeys, my environment and my art defines me.”

Thought provoking

Marta White's intimate portrayal of her life,poetry and art, is expressive, emotional and heart filled. It speaks to the very nature of mankind, and the various, crisis and opportunities, that life puts in front of us. The dollhouse, which I equate to our childhood, represent our inner chld our dreams and desires only to reflect back at life and the absurdity of it all. The picture of the "mixed media box's', are eerie and thought provoking. What demons and joys are expressed, open the door for thoughtful debates, but leave you, comfortably uncomfortable. Great Read and must be on your shelf

A Stimulating Combination of Art and Poetry

I recommend this book. White's poetry ranges from scathing indictments of corruption, war, disease and religious hypocrisy to humorous memories and unique observations of a childhood in the Bronx. The vivid photographic reproduction of her meticulous art boxes and collages prompted me to display the book, returning to it from time to time, discovering yet more intriguing detail in the images.
