Hysteria in the Kitchen

The above reviewer nailed the plot, so I won't go into that. Gina is someone a lot of women can relate to (bad hair day, Martian men), and Tate is the ultimate good ol' boy who really does ooze charm AND can cook well. Their bantering sparkles like champagne, but these two are totally authentic Southerners, including Gina's family. YES, her mama does call about every day, and you can still find her type in every small Georgia town. As a lagniappe, there are three (fairly simple) recipes at the end - what do you expect from a story about two people fighting to get on The Cooking Channel.
Those who love Dorothea Frank and Anne Siddons will flat-out love this one. Mary Kay Andrews just has Frank's knack for capturing the rhythm of the South and spinning it into a laugh-aloud, recognize- yourself tale. She's about as addictive as Co'cola and Moonpies:)

Not her best

I should preface this by saying that I adore Mary Kay Andrews/ Kathy Hogan Trocheck (same author writing under two different names). Normally I find her books really entertaining, and they're among my favorites, so I pre-ordered this one.

Unfortunately, the cast of characters just left me flat in this one. The usual zippy dialogue and entertaining scenarios never materialized. Maybe if it had been from another author I didn't like so much this wouldn't have mattered, but I have such high expectations for her books that I found this one a big disappointment. It's definitely not on a par with her Savannah books or Hissy Fit. Get this one from the library, and save your pennies for the next Mary Kay!

I too am a fan of Mary Kay Andrews, I too pre-ordered Deep Dish... I couldn't even finish the book, it was that boring. I gave it to a friend (who also loves Ms. Andrews' books) and she couldn't get through it either.
At first I thought well, maybe I'm just disappointed because these are new characters but no, it was just a boring book.
Before you buy this book, read excerpts, it is NOT Ms. Andrews usual fare.

juggling the (extra)ordinary

In the context of Derrida's early project - to provide a critique of the foundational human science - linguistics - Of Grammatology is an essential book. In it he develops ideas about "writing" and about the "trace", ideas which illuminate much about the modern science of linguistics. His work is an astringent when applied to other more "analytical" philosophers of language (e.g. John Searle).
Derrida's writing style may seem difficult at first, until one realizes that it embodies two other important ideas - play and undecideability. Of Grammatology is not exactly a book of philosophy, and not exactly a book on linguistics, and not exactly a literary work but one which rests uneasily among these three disciplines. By not drawing conclusions, by keeping in play many concepts at once, Derrida manages to provide provocative ideas on mental representations while at the same time instantiating these ideas in the ebb and flow of the work itself.
Because of its kalidescopic style, the book can be read for the pure enjoyment of a rambunctious entertainment, and as an important philosophical text, and as a satire, and as profoundly serious.
As the academic furor over "decontruction" dies down, Derrida's work perhaps can begun to be read for its human importance. Those who value an insistent questioning will find a champion here.

What does this mean?

I was unable to figure out what this book meant. I kept reading, hoping things would get clearer, but I got the impression that the language just kept on going round in self referential circles, not actually talking about anything clear that I could grasp. It's like, just when I thought it was about to come out and say something that made sense, it seemed to end up saying something else instead. Infuriating. Can someone please sum up what Derrida was trying to say here?

Among the most important texts of the 20th century

This volume is central to Derrida's project and is, perhaps, his single most important work. In it, one finds the essentail contentions that inform his other essays. Whether one views, from the analytic tradition, these concepts as indulgent rubish or as culmination of a pre-Socratic force hidden under the ubiquitous effects of Plato and Aristotle, they are critical in understanding the disjunctions of philosophy.
While Derrida's writing may be difficult because it is both dense and playful, allusive and iconoclastic,these presentational "quirks" are not empty but tied to the basic structures of his argumentation.
Since its publication, popular characterizations of this book have attributed to it positions it does not hold. Derrida is, among his other gifts, a scholar of the first order and behind his statements are close readings of many of the philosphical greats that preceded his effort. This is not the babbling of the manic mind but a huge encounter with the dominant tradition of interpretation.
Such a gigantic target cannot be exhausted in one volume, but even if one wishes to affirm the analytic tradition, this volume should be read with the respect and care one gives a worthy enemy.

About the Author
Joseph E. Stiglitz is a Nobel Prize–winning economist and the best-selling author of The Great Divide, Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy, The Price of Inequality, Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy, and Globalization and Its Discontents. He is a columnist for the New York Times and Project Syndicate and has written for Vanity Fair, Politico, The Atlantic, and Harper’s. He teaches at Columbia University and lives in New York City.

Jay Rosengard is Lecturer in Public Policy at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He has 35 years of international experience designing, implementing, and evaluating development policies in public finance and fiscal strategy, tax and budget reform, municipal finance and management, intergovernmental fiscal relations, banking and financial institutions development, microfinance, SME finance, and public administration. Mr. Rosengard is director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government's Financial Sector Program, which focuses on the development of bank and nonbank financial institutions and alternative financing instruments that include microfinance (small-scale lending and local savings mobilization), mainstream commercial banking (general and special-purpose banks), and wholesale financial intermediation (municipal development funds, venture capital funds, pooled financing, secondary mortgage facilities, and securitization).

Unfortunately this book turned out to be a disappointment. I found it poorly written, hard to understand, inconsistent and boring compared to other books on public economics i have read. I can not in any way recommend this book.

Vietnamese Americans

Hien Duc Do provides a good account of vietnamese americans. To often they are reduced to stereotypes like the model minority or poor boat people, however there is obviously more than that to vietnamese americans. Do covers issues of vietnamee history anbd culture especially important considering the american involvement in vietnam. It looks at how vietnames have come to this country as refugees and as immigrants. Do deals with the prejudice that vietnamese have faced such as conflicts in states like louisanaia and texas when they entred the fishing industry as well as problems with other minority groups like hispanics and blacks over goverment resources. There is a good deal of information about the generational conflicts between first and second generation vietnames who differ in areas like language and values. It looks at problems like mental health that are not dealt with all that much in the vietnamese community Do does cover the model minority issue discussing school achievement and looks at how above average poverty rates among vietnamese.

Very funny and too true - very disengaging

I ordered 3 copies of this book for friends at work - we are now completely disengaged - finding it very hard to put any effort into work. It is a very good read and very funny. Surprising that a French woman's experience of working in a large corporation in France is so similar to mine in this country. It opens your eyes and reinforces what you already know about politics in a big company. As I pass the copies around the office, it is like a cancer that is spreading - not sure what the engagement score of the department will be by the time everyone has read it!

Entertaining..

This book was originally published in French, and as such, a bit of the context has persisted. However, there's a lot to be learnt from in this book about surviving in a large organization. The word play is excellent. Very enjoyable -- a fun read!

Never gets to the point

This book is more focused on middle management or corporate. Lots of issues that we all know, but not really much advice on how to actually "deal" with it. We all know what the problem is, but what do you do with it? I found myself getting very bored halfway through it, and started to just skim to the end. I did not even pass it on to friends, just trashed it.

Gracia ¿no?

Este libro no es sobre gente que habla acerca de frías pruebas que demuestran algo; son testimonios e historias que tocan lo más profundo del corazón. La verdad es que no podemos saber a ciencia cierta si todo lo que narran los entrevistados en verdad les ocurrió, pero al mismo tiempo, cada una de esas historias no son nada ajeno a la realidad del cristianismo: corazones restaurados, vicios olvidados, perdón sin parangón,etc. Creo que este libro debe ser leído por todos aquellos que creen que Dios ya no puede actuar en la vida de alguien, ya que, sin duda, Dios puede actuar en la vida de quien él desee, sin tener que darnos ni la más mínima explicación.
