The best book about the hardware of neurotechnology.

Once a month we get a book on somebody else's view of the mind, the brain, or both.
Instead of more theory, Images Of Mind describes the machinery neuroscientists use to take all the pictures that have sparked all the theories about how the brain works. Complete with lush illustrations and lucid descriptions, Images takes the reader on a historical tour of the devices scientists have used to "watch" the mind work. From EEGs to PET scanners, Raichle and Posner describe how neurotechnological devices work and what they measure.
The writing is direct and elegant, meant for the pro and the layperson.

Upbeat, but oddly organized and a little unclear

This is an enthusiastically written and nicely illustrated book, but the order of presentation is strange, possibly a result of bad editing. You might find it helpful to skip straight to pages 63-66 and study the introductory material that appears, for some reason, a quarter of the way through the text. It explains how the PET scanning technique works. The book nods at other technologies that produce and/or record signals from the brain, including MRI and electroencephalography, but it is basically a book about PET. The acronym stands for Positron Emission Tomography.
PET scanning is a low resolution technique that produces a computed picture of oxygen uptake by tissues in the brain. The experimental idea is to get the brain of a human experimental volunteer to do something - recite the multiplication tables, say - and then try to notice whether and how the given project changes the relative oxygen demand of brain tissue in various regions of the brain.
The hope would be to identify local volumes of brain tissue which are associated with and thus perhaps even perform some basic psychological function. In practice, the brain obligingly lights up here and there - presumably consuming oxygen in order to energize its thinking.
From the explanations given in the book, it appears that the PET scanned pictures, which are quite beautiful, are thought to reflect heightened metabolic activity in the nerves of the brain, and only in the nerves. The book speaks often about functional brain "modules" and "assemblages of nerves." It is not clear to me, from the text, just how the scanner distinguishes between the nerves and all the other types of tissue in the brain. The glia, for example, outnumber the nerve cells about 9 to 1 in the brain, and these cells breathe oxygen too. In other words it is not clear, from the book, how the scanner somehow selectively singles out nerve cells and snaps their picture.
And maybe it doesn't. I was left wondering what a PET scan of some other complex organ, such as the liver, looks like. The PET technique may just be fine, brilliant in fact, but if it is, then maybe it deserves a clearer explanation that I could find in here.

Very interesting and intriguing book to read. Information on what scientists are learning about the brain and shows the outcome on some brain scans. I know it sounds boring to some but i find it fascinating.

About the Author
Jay S. Albanese is Professor in the Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. He served as Chief of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the research arm of the U.S. Department of Justice, from 2002 to 2006. He is author of many articles, and author/editor of 16 books. Albanese is the recipient of the Elske Smith Distinguished Lecturer Award from Virginia Commonwealth University, the Teaching Excellence Award from Niagara University, and the G.O.W. Mueller Award for Outstanding Contributions to Comparative/International Criminal Justice from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, International Section. He has served as Executive Director of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and is a past president and fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He currently serves on the Executive Board of the American Society of Criminology.

Terrific overview of organized crime

A well-organized and comprehensive overview of the subject with a dedicated chapter on the history of the Mafia in the US, including all the mob trials of recent years. Good opening chapters to distinguish the essential characteristics of organized crime, using actual cases. A nice review of investigation, prosecution, defense, and sentencing in organized crime cases, plus a chapter on transnational organized crime.

About the Author
Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Duke University. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, he received his doctorate from the University of Oxford. He developed his interest in applied macroeconomics early in his career while working at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Before moving to Duke, Hoover taught economics at the University of California, Davis, and at Oxford. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics (1988), Causality in Macroeconomics (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and The Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics (Cambridge University Press, 2001), as well as nine edited volumes and more than 100 academic articles on macroeconomics, monetary economics, econometrics, the methodology and philosophy of economics, and the history of economic thought. He is past chairman of the International Network for Economic Method, the past president of the History of Economics Society and a former editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. He is currently the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University.

The best practical macroeconomics textbook that I have come across - but note that it is only an introduction

I studied macroeconomics in the 1980s, with a textbook and professor that had no clue about what was going on in the real economy. We studied the IS/LM model but no attempt was made to relate it or any other model to reality. I've recently been browsing macroeconomics textbooks in the hope that 25 years later there would exist a textbook that deals with the real world and not purely with theoretical models. I like theoretical constructions, but they need to be put in perspective. Economics is not yet as developed a science to produce just one explanatory model. Sadly most books are just as useless as they were 25 years ago.

The current book is a decent attempt to link economic theory with the real world economy. It discusses real economy issues and it does not use the format of having all real economy material in small boxed entries. It tries to be more integrative. It discusses technological change, financial markets, but also more traditional themes like the multiplier. Since very few books actually attempts to make this connection, I have given the current book four stars. Given lack of competition with other books, there is great room for improvement. The current content is probably worth THREE stars, but that is as good as it gets.

It really is amazing when you look at a textbook (including this one), you are left with the feeling that macroeconomists really know about most things going on in the world. How ironic. The picture presented is sadly too much of a façade. If you want to get a deeper understanding I would advice getting one of the books that critique economics from within (e.g. Debunking Economics - Revised and Expanded Edition: The Naked Emperor Dethroned?) and a modern overview of different macroeconomic views (e.g. Modern Macroeconomics: Its Origins, Development And Current State) - but only after you've read a textbook. Also some economic history would be very helpful to read. There are so many choices so I cannot describe them here. At the very least read a pop-history book about the financial crisis (e.g. The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine). From there you can venture into more serious writing about older times.

One more piece of advice, when you pick further readings, try to avoid authors that have an axe to grind. There are many people out there right now that just want to bash economics (or certain schools in economics). You are not well served by reading these books because they are biased. What you want is books that lay down the facts.

Back to this book and some of its weaknesses:
- I do not understand why the book uses the term "intermediate" in its title. This book can clearly be a first book on macroeconomics for undergraduate students. So except some 150 pages of really simple stuff (like mean, standard deviation, correlation, regression). In fact I am often left thinking that this book is written for people without basic prerequisites.
- There is no discussion of different schools of macroeconomists. There should at least have been an introduction with useful, relevant references. Terms like Monetarism, RBC, Neo-Keynesianism, and Keynesianism deserve some discussion.
- The focus is a bit too strong on a national economy and I would have liked a stronger treatment describing inter-linkages between countries. As it stands the focus is on the US. Many will like this, but some will consider it a weakness. We have one world after all.
- Clearly the author does not have personal experience of using macroeconomics to provide advice. It would have been very interesting to link the models in the book to blogs and economic advisory services.

I reviewed several other books in the bookstore, but I just want to highlight a few alternatives:
- Macroeconomics: A European Text. An interesting book worth looking into, but I didn't buy it.
- Macroeconomics. The classic textbook written by Dornbusch/Fisher. It is a product of two ivory tower scholars that did not seem to care one iota about the real economy. This was my original textbook 25 years ago. Honestly I don't thing a book in the 17th edition is going to be a pathbreaker! There are loads of other copy-cat books trying to replicate this one.
- Concise Guide to Macroeconomics: What Managers, Executives, and Students Need to Know is an attempt to make macroeconomics understandable. However, it is just scratches on the surface. I can't see it being useful for anyone really, but it will give you some superficial knowledge.

I will provide an update in a year's time when I have been through the whole book.

One of the most important modern religious works.

This is the book that brought an end to 19th century liberal theology's attempt to produce a neat synthesis of Christianity and culture, a psychological Christianity or an anthropologized Christianity. The project was a failure, and Barth tells us why and what should replace it -- a religionless Christianity? Not really a Biblical commentary. If you're looking for an exposition of the text, this isn't what you want. It's more like a manifesto, using Paul's epistle to the Romans as a place to begin the attack on cultural, non-prophetic Christianity. Written in a dialectical, highly expressive style. If you like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, this is your kind of theologizing -- with a hammer. It can be exhausting, and you will either love it or hate it. Barth later changed his style and tone, but not his message.

The infinite qualitative difference between God and Humanity

This is Barth's bombardment against syncretism of all kinds in Christianity. He wrestles with Paul's epistle until it is 'transparent' to the mid-20th century context, and exposes the compromises of modern religion. Barth's struggle (and that of his disciple Dietrich Bonhoeffer) against the Nazi regime flowed inevitably from his relentless questioning of Christian liberalism.
At first it may appear that he is only dealing superficially with the text of Romans as a pretext for his own thoughts, but soon you see a depth of understanding of Paul's message that makes other commentaries appear lightweight. The question for Christian churches is what to build on the rubble that this book leaves behind of our most cherished ecclesiastical and religious dreams. Highly recommended.

An exhausting read

The way to tackle this book is first not to expect an easy read in the way of a 'companion read to Paul's Epistle to the Romans'. This is stuff for theologians. I have to admit that it was way above me. All I could rescue from its doomed oblivion were some quotations here and there. I think the first and second above reviewers give a good account of it: this is a break-up with liberal evangelicalism; it's no "make-you-feel-good" religion. I suppose it meant a lot by the time it was published; today we might take it for granted.

He points out, as Luther did, the "kernel" of the whole Epistle: "For there is no distinction: for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (3:23)

On sin: "Precisely when we recognize that we are sinners do we perceive that we are brothers."

Works vs Faith: "So long as we are swayed by any other motive except faith, we do not stand before God."

About the Author

In 1998, Tom Malloy was one of the lead actors in the film Gravesend, produced by Oliver Stone. The film became an indie-cult favorite. When this film failed to make him a household name, Tom decided to learn as many facets of the movie business as he could. Over the course of eight years, he created his own method to ?nance films. Tom first wrote and produced The Attic, a thriller directed by Mary Lambert (director of Pet Sematary and Pet Sematary II), and starring John Savage, Jason Lewis, Elisabeth Moss, and Tom. Tom then wrote and produced The Alphabet Killer, a psychological thriller directed by Rob Schmidt (director of Wrong Turn). The ?lm stars Eliza Dushku, Cary Elwes, Oscar-winner Timothy Hutton, Michael Ironside, and Tom in one of the lead roles. Tom wrote and produced Love N’ Dancing, a dance ?lm/romantic comedy directed by Rob Iscove (director of She’s All That). The ?lm stars Amy Smart and Tom, along with Billy Zane, Betty White, and Rachel Dratch. As a direct result of contacts made through the techniques of Bankroll, Tom recently partnered with the Han Shi group of China to produce a slate of U.S. films over the next three years.

Best Book on Film Fundraising

***** Five Stars out of Five! Best book on film fundraising yet! It really gave me a shot in the arm to raise money for my next feature. It's written from a practitioner, not a theorist perspective, in other words Tom has done it from scratch and writes in a conversational style. Artists sometimes forget the second word in "show business" is business, and Tom demystifies the business of bankrolling features in the indie world. God bless you Tom for selflessly sharing your insights, may He multiply back to you everything you have and give.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE HAIR-RAISING -- Maybe good for inspiration, but don't you dare solely rely on it.

I have over 35-years experience in Hollywood, and I partly agree with Chris Doyle's one-star review on this book--though I'd be a bit less harsh. I'd pay $2 for what I believe would actually come to two pages of useful info. And I know that Chris *did* indeed read the book because I did too and felt much the same way.

But I do admire Malloy for his positive energy--even if he does resort to repeating trite motivational sales tales we've all heard before (like the "x number of no's to get to a yes" bit) and--worse yet--echoing "The Secret".

I certainly found his opinion of entertainment attorneys & how to deal with them to be spot on.

But his opinion of most sellers at the AFM is far more positive than mine, and suggesting that any novice producer go down there is like leading lambs to the largest wolf-pack of idea-thieves on the planet.

Malloy's examples of pitches (and the "hype" vocabulary he utilizes in them) make him sound like a two-bit hustler and are a joke to anyone who knows what real intelligence-based & heart-based investors actually respond to. I was terribly amused by the pathetic rationales Malloy gives for some of the statements he uses in his pitches too.

He doesn't seem to ever point out that a film's sales and the amount of those sales that are actually returned to an investor are two different things, either. Real ROI is much more difficult to calculate than Malloy implies.

In fact, there were times when his advice nearly made my hair stand on end.

If Malloy indeed raised the money for the films he lists, then I assure you he had a lot of help from others in ways he purposely does not mention in this book.

Years ago, the infamous Chase Revel wrote in an editorial in Entrepreneur Magazine that "enthusiasm and positive energy are excellent and necessary to have, but that you can't let them blind you to the realities of the business you're in." He was right. Regardless of how much enthusiasm you have, you must consider sound business research AND THE LAW in your decision-making.

If you're raising movie money, do not rely on Malloy or Dov Simens' books alone--lest you find yourself in serious violation of securities laws.

I would additionally recommend the books by John Cones and Louise Levison at the very least.

But Michael Wiese's publishing of Malloy's tome here (without serious content revisions) now makes me want to carefully examine any book published under his label before I buy it.

It's traditional for authors to get their friends to post gushingly positive reviews for their books when they're first listed here on Amazon. I'm afraid that that's what's going on in here, too.

Raising movie money is NOT easy, not in the least--not in any way, shape or form. Such statements were likely planted in the other reviews just to get you to buy this book. "It's easy," you read. "Wow," you thought! "Sign me up! I'll buy it if it'll indeed tell how easy it is."

The Independent Filmmaker's "The Little Engine that Could"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book on a subject that I initially thought would be pretty slow going. I was very surprised that this excellent reference book was also an entertaining and personal glimpse into the passion and energy of a man completely focused on his career as an actor in films.
This book will entertain you, educate you, inspire you and motivate you to keep your focus and get the "gold" so that you can make your film. Make sure you have your highlighter, pencils, and "Post-it" as you read this book because you'll want to reference it many times as you prepare your plan to produce your dream film.

And even though this book is focused on film financing, I would recommend this book to anyone who has an idea to sell because the cause, the work, the desire and the need is the same.
