Great Introduction to Systems Engineering

I took a course in school that used this book and I really enjoyed the book and what it taught me about systems engineering. The authors do a great job of walking the student through the systems engineering process, and ginving a general overview of the steps. The later chapters expand upon this overview to give the detail needed to actually carry out the process. The last part of the book expands upon the "-ilities" of systems engineering which are the authors partiucalr areas of interest. I think anyone interested in systems engineering should get this book, its a great resource. A few things I didn't like was the constant referencing of graphs and figures from previous chapters, it really inhibits my learing when I have to keep flipping back and forth to follow a train of thought. There are also a few chunks of the book that are very, very hard to follow the logical train of thought and require meticulious attention to the detail, and often require rereading. I'm hoping the authors with put out an updated and expanded edition soon, that compensates for these shortfalls.

About the Author
Dr. Nana Banchie Darkwah, the author of the book, is a University Professor in America. He is an American citizen born in Ghana where he is still a King from the Aduana Clan of Ghana in West Africa. His interest in ancient history and the Bible began from tribal stories that link most of the royalties and people of modern Ghana to the dynaties and people of Ancient Egypt. Dr. Darkwah speaks eleven African and European languages and he supports his revelations in the book with numerous linguistic analysis and evidence. Dr. Darkwah has written five Children's stories and three books. His next book: Ancient Egypt: The Story African Has Never Told is due for publication this Fall.

Flawed Excellence

This book is about the early inhabitation of black Africans in North Africa, (including) the so-called Middle East and actually southern Asia as far as China. Creating all of the "world religions", not only the monotheistic ones, but also e.g. Buddhism. It is about the Jews/Hebrews originally having been black-skinned, and therefore all of the important characters and authors of the bible. The author shows how Christianity/Judaism was created along ancient Egyptian religion and sets the record straight about some false assumptions of Western egyptologists, e.g. concerning the pharao Akhenaten (or Akenten). He claims a strong relationship between the ancient Egyptians and Western Africans who live in Ghana today, most of all the Akan. The book is also about the fakings of the religion and their own origin of the early Jews and the Vatican some centuries later, the latter of which especially designed the mass slavery of blacks for the purpose of concealing the origin of the bible.

For all of that, the book deserves full points and some bonus points. However, some subtractions have to be made.

For one thing, the writing is the absolute epitomy of repetetive writing I dearly hope to never have to be exposed to in my natural lifetime ever again. In fact, I had to tame my adrenalin gland because of that, while reading some sentences a couple of hundreds of times. The book could easily get digested to much less than a fourth without any sentence, let alone content getting lost. However, I am aware that in some African cultures this may be the normal way of writing, so ok...

There are minor inaccuracies. Linguistically, for example, the German last name "Bauer" would not be translated by any German as "builder", but as "farmer". (An easy mistake to make for non-German speakers.) Also, Germany did not have to give up its colony of Togo after WWII, but during WWI.

Using genetic science in his reasoning, the author should have known that there are absolutely no races among humans. Some wrong assumptions, also related ones, are derived in this book from that lack of overstanding. Being a historian he may have known that the concept of a "nation", as some of us believe in it today is little more than two centuries old or less, most certainly it did not exist in ancient times. Researching ancient religious concepts of gender, he might have cross-checked that with modern (yet largely censored) information, coming to the conclusion that different genders do not exist either. That would have been necessary to better overstand the respective ancient African knowledge/religious concept about that. Also, of course, religion did exist well before the ancient Egyptians, way back into the stone age, so it is daring to aver, the ancient Egyptians invented religion. And no matter wether it is true that the ancient Egyptians left Egypt to become the Akan and other West Africans (or wether there exists a relationship between the two groups, BEFORE splitting and one half of them actually BECOMING the ancient Egyptians), most certainly it is ridiculous to claim, the ancient black Egyptians became "the Africans" as in ALL of them. For example genetics should have shown the author that the so-called San (and so-called Mbutis) are the original humans. And of course, Africa was inhabitated before the black Egyptians moved to whereever.

The author's general claims are convincing, however, some of his specific conclusions are occasionally a bit of a fishing. Others are theories, in need to get scientifically proven. Which is not to say that the author is generally wrong about that what is mentioned above in the content paragraph. On the contrary, that's why the book still got almost full points despite its flaws. In fact, this book is one of the very most important ones to have been written around the turn of the millennium. No religious person of almost any branch of religion on this planet should miss it, most certainly no RastafarI, as I am one: There will be some surprises for RastafarI, confirming and challenging ones, all absolutely necessary to know and to grow spiritually. For example that "Jah" is the FEMALE version of God called "Jahwe", the male version, at other places. So much for the patriarchy of the more orthodox previous Rasta generations.

Some information I missed in the book. For example about the sign of life on the cover. Though mentioned and named and also mentioned that the Christian cross is derived from it, it would have been absolutely worth it to explain the different parts of its symbolism. (Which I did with other sources and I can only recommend the reader to do this and draw the conclusion, why the Vatican changed it, not only for concealing the origin of Christian religion, but also to conceal the before mentioned gender concept.) Also, I assume Ethiopia plays a larger role in all of that than merely getting mentioned.

I hope this book will be followed up by other books enlightening the original religion, which became Christianity and the other world religions, because clearly, Western egyptologists have largely butchered any overstanding of it and this book merely scrapes off the surface in this respect.

This is a great book but there are things you need to know.
This book is written based upon the African language similarities with those of present-day Africa, ancient Africa and words found within the bible. With that said, there are sitings noted from various African nations throughout West Africa.
The thing that should be noted is that the author clearly states that the Jewish people are not the original Jews. The author is under the opinion that the original Jewish people were African people who left probably during the so-called Exodus. The present day Jewish people as stated within the book still carry African names. If I read this correctl, that is from cover to cover without skipping pages, this is what the author stated within the book.
This is an excellent literary work for all African descendants because it does what so many have feared; connects present and traditional Africa to the ancient Africans and to the Africans Who Wrote the Bible.

Dr. Darkwah wrote a good book, but all reading this should know there are other books on this topic as well. For this, one should check Hebrewism in West Africa. Any way, Darkwah had a good book, and showed the African presence in Egypt as well as among the Afrim( as he would say)or Jews. I have talked to people from Ghana that live in the United States, and they told me everything that Darkwah has said in this book is almost common knowledge in West Africa. I have even met people with names that Darkwah has mentioned. At first glance, anyone that is not willing to do the research will just excuse this book as crap but if you do your research you'll see that Egypt,the Afrim or Jews,and West Africans all have one thing in common, the same anscestors.

I have decided to revisite this review based on the article written under the topic "Affirmative Action for the Bible."This reviewer denies that Hebrewism is from Egypt so in this next paragraph I will destroy him.

First off it should be said by, Biblical chronology and this book, that Abraham, Moses, Jacob, Joseph, and yes Jesus all wen't to EGYPT. The Old Testament was written at the Library of Alexander from old papyrus texts in EGYPT. The story of creation can be found in the deity Khnum in Egypt. Issac name in Egyptian(Ysach) means Ys-place, Ach-of offerings to the sun god Ra. If you recall Issac was going to be a sacrice. Noah was Nuak, and in Egyptian Mythology Nu was equal with the waters. Also Isreal is YSRAIL. In Egyptian Ys-place Ra-sun god Il-creation. So this very name already means place of Ra's creation. For verification on this information read African presence in Early Aisa(Ivan Van Sertima/Runoka Rashidi) Also you sould know, monotheism predated Moses with Akhenaton of Egypt, and Zoroaster of Babylon. The first flood stories were of that in Egypt with Ra and Hathor, and in Babylon with Utnapishtim and Gilgamesh. The story of Jacob the Dreamer is an old tale in Egyptian Hyrogliphics. Even with this Jesus is predated in the orchestration of his Bibical life first by Osiris, Horus, and Isis, and then by 16 counterparts(for more on that read 16 Crucified Saviors by Kersey Graves)

Not a good beginner's guide

I was (and still am) very interested in learning more about narrative therapy--as the tidbits I know of seem like great additions to treatment. I bought this book because of all of great reviews here on Amazon (especially the reviews saying this was a great book for beginners), I'm giving this 3 stars because this book is extremely hard to understand. I would not recommend this to beginners. I'm not sure what other narrative books (if any) offer a great beginner's guide..but this was definitely not that kind of book.

I am not sure why White writes in such a confusing manner but the next attempt I make to learn more about Narrative therapy will not include any writings by White. Yes, he was a brilliant guy but even the brightest people have great difficulty communicating to others who are not at their level.

An Excellent Addition to the Therapist's Library

I remember reading about narrative therapy in my beginning counseling textbooks and thinking, "I would never use this, it doesn't seem helpful or communicable." That mindset changed when I sat in with another counselor who used it almost exclusively. I was amazed. Not only was he able to use it across multiple ages and clinical diagnoses, but people (including myself, the observer) left the office feeling like a new person. I asked how he first got involved with narrative therapy, and he pointed me in the direction of this book by the late Michael White. I want to read this book twice before I give any critical analysis to the content, but I will say that everything you need to know about narrative practice is in this book. That said, it is a lot to digest. I think I struggle most with this book because of the author's Australian heritage. It's not that his writing lacks potency or salience, it's just culturally different from what I'm used to here in the States. Nevertheless, I encourage anyone interested in expanding their therapy toolbox to read and reread this book. You will find that many of the central aspects of therapy (what makes it work e.g., the relationship) are still the trunk upon which the branches of narratives extend. What made this book significant for me was the way I saw these central dynamics of therapy from a new perspective.

An Enlightened Approach to Change

As a trained intentional interim pastor I work with individuals and congregations that are seeking to make changes. Michael Whites book is a filled with stories of change rooted in a narrative approach and understanding to change. I found his work stimulating to my imagination and his methods along with those who have written about narrative mediation will inform my practice. His prose is easy to read and understand. His genius brightly shine through his case studies and deep understanding of our human condition. His early death is a great loss to those working in the healing professions.

Good Reading

Sophia has made the trip to Bondage Ranch to enjoy herself outside and around the bonfire and maybe try a few new things. Colby has come to give a few demonstrations and lectures never expecting to find a woman who he longs to be with for longer than the weekend. Fate has thrown the two together. Colby and Sophia each find that their attraction is worth exploring. Yet when their time comes to an end the two find themselves wanting more. Yet when they both go home they long for more and when Colby calls and asks for more Sophia is ready to negotiate but once again the two must remember that their time is short. Is there more to their attraction or is it just that and nothing more? Can the two find a way to be happy or will this only be temporary?

I enjoyed meeting Sophia and Colby. Sophia is a strong woman and has her own life and children to worry about. Colby is a good man who has been hurt before and has closed off his heart. That is until he meets Sophia. She has worked her way past his defenses by just being herself. He longs to have a woman like her in his life but he knows it would never work. Sophia is not one to sit on the side lines and takes up the chance to play with Colby but she soon finds herself in too deep. Both Colby and Sophie have some hard decisions to make in this book. I loved seeing Sophia blossom under Colby. He takes her into his world and opens her eyes to many new things.The two are hot together and the emotions run strong between them. I enjoyed seeing the two work through it all and try to grab for their happy ever after.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is book 7 in this series but I have not read the previous book and didn't feel lost at all.

Sophia went to the Bondage Ranch with Remy -- a guy she had been casually dating -- for the adventure of it. Not expecting to participate, or enjoy, any of the aspects of the ranch, an unexpected downpour sends her to the barn where she meets Colby Brock, a Dominant who's been brought to the ranch to provide demonstrations on several techniques.

Colby has a strict code of conduct when it comes to his relationships with submimissives. When he sees Sophia across the room, he's intrigued. When her "boyfriend" volunteers her as his model for his demo, he's even more intrigued by the woman who oozes sensuality.

The brief taste they had of each other during that shortened weekend wasn't enough to satisfy either of them. Colby's previous marriage has left him gun-shy when it comes to long term relationships. Sophia's prior marriage wasn't the best, but she truly believes in the power of love.

I hadn't read any other Bondage Ranch books but after this one I plan to rectify that! I enjoyed this story! Sophia is more of a hedonist than a submissive but she loves to try new experiences. Colby is a somewhat famous dominate who's at bondage ranch to do some tutorials. Her acquaintance and somewhat fling raises her hand to participate for a demo with Colby and Sophia finds herself in ropes and being flogged. She enjoys it more than she thinks she should!! Colby was a great character and was written well as a divorced and eternal bachelor. Sophia makes him question his month long only contracts with submissives and his thoughts on love. Truly enjoyable read with steamy scenes and enjoyable characters.

Absolutely no historically-accurate detail is spared in this minutely specific guide to history and development of diesel locomotives, from the boxcab switchers of the 1920s to the passenger and freight locomotives of the 30's and 40's to modern-day AC-traction-motor road locomotives. Charts of construction and service dates for each locomotive type will aid the hobbyist in selecting a historically appropriate model for each setting. It should be noted that The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotives is a guide to the history, function, and appearance of diesel locomotives - it is not a step-by-step how-to guide for building them. Indeed, the wealth of researched information ultimately warrants its classification as a book about railroading history rather than a hobbyist book, even though the primary intended audience is model railroad hobbyists. About the Author

Irene Deliege obtained her qualifications at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. After a twenty year career as a music teacher, she retrained in psychology and obtained her PhD in 1991 from the University of Liege where she was responsible for the Unit of Research in Psychology of Music. A founding member of ESCOM, she has acted since its inception as permanent secretary and Editor of the Journal MUSICAE SCIENTIAE. She is the author of several articles and co-edited books dedicated to music perception.

Jane Davidson is the current Callaway/Tunely Chair of Music at the University of Western Australia. She has published extensively within psychology of music with research topics including expressive body movement, collaborative performance, music learning and ability, and singing. Her first academic appointment was at University of Keele between 1991-1993, where she worked as a post-doctoral fellow with John Sloboda and Michael Howe on an innovatory study of the biographical determinants of musical abilities. This led to more than 20 joint peer-reviewed publications.

At the same time the Empire faced growing internal social and economic problems: plague and war had diminished the agricultural population and productivity was falling; the army was under increasing strain in defending the extensive boundaries. Christianity, too, continued to prove an unsettling influence - accepted and established in Constantinople, but not in Rome.

Dense starting point, but good.

This is a short little book that is tackling a very large subject. It also, self-consciously is limiting the extent it covers its subject, thus the limiting of 400 A.D. to 1000 A.D. It is also limited in that originally the book was written in 1952, only with some updating done in both '67 and '85. At its core is still a good framework for what was known on the subject in 1950.
All that said it does provide a good little introduction to the topic of post-Roman Barbarian folk movements. The major tribes involved in those movements in Western Europe were the Franks, Goths, Lombards, and a few others. Because of the historical record being a lot of Swiss-cheese, with writers from the past often confusing one tribe for another, or using words for Goth or Frank as a generic term meaning "Any German dude" complicates the modern understanding of the situation.
The major reason people find the study of these folk movements and invasions confusing is because even the people writing about it at the time, the Roman-Celtic peoples living in Italy, Spain and France were confused by it. This has lead to history scholars being confused about it to a certain extent. Naturally enough, this leads to a lot of confusion among laypersons on the subject.
This is only a good introduction though. If you are seriously interested in any of the tribes in particular, then you may wish to look elsewhere. But for an understanding of some of the major interrelationship disputes the various tribes had with the Romans and each other, then this provides a good starting point.
Of particular value is the books endnotes and bibliography. These provide direction for the person looking to continue and learn more about the topics and issues raised herein.

does the author care if you know

This book covers one of the most confused periods in western history, and I must say it left me more confused than enlightened.

The novice may gain superficial knowledge about the Lombards, Visigoths, Franks, and Ostrogoths, from Hadrill's compact book, but not much else. (I challenge any beginner who trodded through this to say anything illuminating about Visigothic Spain!)

Too many times the author frolics about interpreting documents and developments without giving any background information. If I did not know any better, I would think he was having a debate in his own mind. Hadrill certainly lacks expositional skills, nor is his ability to write clear english any better.

I would not recommend this to a novice (layperson or student). It is one of those books you read, set down, reflect upon, and realize you do not remember anything it said.
For an advanced student who has the requisite background knowledge, it might serve as a contentious (brilliant? tendentious?) interpretive history, but for the beginner it is gibberish.

History professors should stop using this text in introductory courses. Why not pick a text by an author who actually cares about EXPLAINING the Barbarian West to students so that they will UNDERSTAND the time period. Methinks Hadrill wishes to impress with his erudition too much.

This is a book that will give food for thought, but it requires sturdy teeth to chew.

This book is at times too dense and frustrating. The advanced student will nevertheless find much that is valuable and refreshing, while the novice will possibly be intimidated or annoyed away.

I liked the non-reverent and the contrarian approach that the author employed to deconstruct some received views (or those that were received back in his day) which he shows to be not based in fact. At times, though, he seems to be carried too far by the desire to be original. Also, some of the discussions are terse and cryptical to the point of being completely unclear. For example, I simply di not understand what exactly he was making of Odoacer: in a short paragraph two contradictory views were advanced, each with great assurance.
