Waiting Around

Having read all of Melissa Nathan's novels, I can say that she is just as pithy and delightful as ever. Nathan's books have an energy and verve which move the pace along quickly, making the reader not want to put down the book until they are finished with it. Reading one of her books is like curling up to watch one of your favorite comedies unfold.

Nathan's latest novel, "The Waitress", tells the story of twenty-four year old Katie Simmonds, an Oxford graduate who works as a waitress while she is 'waiting' to find the perfect job. The perfect job seems to come along each week when Katie's mind alights on something she thinks she'd like to do, but isn't brave enough to risk a commitment to. And lack of commitment is a problem in her personal life as well. She's just walked out on a date with the only man she's liked, only to discover that he's her new boss, and he's already dating someone else. But that doesn't seem to stop him from showing interest in her, or is she just mistaken?

"The Waitress" is Melissa Nathan's latest "chick-lit" offering, a genre that I tend to ignore. Yet Nathan manages to rise above most of the other fodder this genre offers by making her characters believeable and intelligent. While the stories are predictable - yes, we know that the girl will find the right guy and they'll live happily ever after - the in-between time is peppered with wit, frustration, and amusing subplots that keep the reader interested even when they know how it will all turn out.

Charming and very funny

Katie Simmonds got her degree from Oxford, then froze, unable to decide what to do with her life. Or rather, she decides what to do--for a day or two. Her roommate has helped her write sixty resumes, for the dream of the moment. In the meantime, she and her actor-best friend Sukie work as waitresses in a cheap cafe. When Katie finally meets her dream man, she is torn with indecision, unable to talk to him at all, and bolts halfway through their dinner date. She doesn't dream that Dan the dream man is about to come the new owner of the cafe--and her new boss.

Katie wrestles with her growing attraction for Dan, and with her self-doubts and concerns for her future. In the meantime, Sukie tries to get acting jobs, Matt the dishwasher falls for beautiful and perfect Jennifer, and brainless waitress Patsy flirts with equally brainless (but talented) chef Nik. Adding to Katie's problems, though, Dan has gone back to his old girlfriend--and that girlfriend quickly makes the right noises to move from girlfriend to fiancee.

Author Melissa Nathan keeps the laughs coming as Katie and Sukie turn being super-rude waitresses into something that appeals to the crowds, as Katie wards off advances from drunk ex-boyfriend Hugh, and as Matt wrestles with overgrown pimples that erupt just as he is about to enter into the perfect date with beautiful Jennifer.

Too often, it seems like the world expects the twenty-something to know what to do. But school, even a degree from Oxford, can offer precious little practical direction--and it is easy to become trapped in a job. Of course, sometimes that job-trap can actually become something more.

Fans of humorous England-set chick-lit will definitely want to add this one to their must-read list.

Light and Fun. Great Summer Read!

It took me about 100 pages to get into this book. Once I did, I was hooked. This reminded me a little bit of "Amanda's Wedding" but it was much better. It is a story about Katie. Katie is a waitress and is trying to figure out what to do with her life. This book was had adjacent stories and expressions of feelings from the other characters. It made the book more interesting and unique. Although the main character was Katie, the author was very deliberate in detailing the lives of some of the other characters and what they were feeling about certain aspects of their lives and how it related to the main plot. Nathan did a very good job with this. As a reader, I didn't feel like these tributaries were unnecessary. They added to the enjoyment of the book. I am definitely interested in reading more books by this author. Well done!

NATO THOMPSON is a writer and curator whose work primarily focuses on the intersection of art, politics, and the city. He has curated numerous large-scale exhibitions and projects both at the public arts institution Creative Time, where he is chief curator, and as a Curator at MASS MoCA. He is the editor of The Interventionists: A Users’ Manual for the Creative Disruption of Everyday Life, and author of Experimental Geography: Radical Approaches to Landscape, Cartography, and Urbanism (Melville House), and Ahistoric Occasion: Artists Making History. He lives in Philadelphia.

Best of all though is the excitement

This is an exceptional book. Complex ideas clearly set out in very readable prose. Best of all though is the excitement, the hope and the inspiration for those of us who make work with the fervent wish that our work will be a part of a crucial dialogue about the world we want to live in. I love Thompson's inclusion of the importance of conviviality in the process of us working at "the intersection of art and politics". Dont just read it - do it!

How artistry and activism can help create a better world

“Seeing Power” by Nato Thompson intelligently explores the meaning of art and activism as tools for social change. Mr. Thompson is a brilliant young art curator and an organizer with the activist art group, Creative Time. This well-written book will appeal to everyone who has ever pondered how we might join the imagined with the real to create the world we want.

Mr. Thompson knows that the corporate media (film, television, video games, radio etc.) have defined how most people have come to understand art today. However, the fine arts community is dependent upon these same connections to wealth, power and privilege. For that reason, the author believes that artists whose works are politically ambiguous tend to be more richly rewarded through the gallery system; whereas artists whose didactic messages make all too clear their political intent are not always valued. The implication is that politically-engaged artists must learn how to interrogate the social beyond the walls of the gallery system.

In fact, Mr. Thompson contends that our understanding of art is made as we experience the world around us. The author believes that Occupy Museums in 2011 illustrated how activism can successfully challenge the programming and funding practices of an elite institution. However, the author feels that artists must connect with the struggles of people whose communities have been impoverished by corporate economics and culture. Artistry joined with activism can help create a better world.

On that point, Mr. Thompson brings the discussion to life with many interesting examples of socially-engaged art. For example, the author himself had a role in organizing a performance of Waiting for Godot in the traumatized Lower Ninth Ward of post-Katrina New Orleans. He cites the performance artist Tania Bruguera as an example of “useful art” whose politics have drawn attention to the struggles of immigrant families in Queens, New York. I was also intrigued by the author’s description of the United Victorian Worker’s protest in 2005 that succeeded in confounding reality and performativity while highlighting age-old issues of labor, gender and justice.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

As an artist, I’ve made “socially engaged” work and run a gallery, but have always felt like something was missing in terms of knowing how to even approach being more political, so I was so happy to discover this book which is wonderful and powerful. This book has been a big help in clearing the path for art's potential in changing small corners of the world. It is very well written and the discussion about creative capital was a revelation to me! This book is mind expanding!

Becky Thorn is a primary school teacher with a long-suffering husband and two children (on whom she tries out her recipes). She has appeared on Masterchef as a guest amateur restaurant critic, and recently designed a meal for the Heinz Weightwatchers range. Her first two books, School Dinners and Movie Dinners were also published by Portico.

Makes School Dinners nice

This is a book that you will either love with fond memories, hate with not-so-fond memories or be totally bemused as to its contents.

For some reason traditional British school dinners have a capacity to polarise opinions. Maybe things are different today but for those who went to a British school before the 1990s will surely have a veritable trip down memory lane with this great little book.

This book is filled full of recipes that will let you recreate those school-time culinary creations at home. Although the book doesn't tell you how to make custard extra lumpy or how to make the boiled eggs turn out green and hard as a gobstopper. Some of the recipes are unfamiliar to this reviewer, possibly coming into vogue after school had finished, such as chicken curry but the other recipes can be a total trip down memory lane. Spam Fritters, Jam Roly-Poly, Minced-meat Pie and Pink Custard... yummmmm!

The recipes give a little bit of knowledge at the start, such as a Beef Cobbler acting as a hot-water bottle, keeping you warm for a time after consumption as well as providing a means for many a schoolboy snigger at its name. Each recipe is written in an informal, yet easy-to-understand way and there are even some groan-worthy jokes and similar factoids thrown in for good measure.

It would have been nice, for the benefit of the uninitiated, to have had some photographs of the recipes and to perhaps show those with dire memories of school food how a dish should have in fact looked if the school kitchen had not managed to mangle it out of all recognition. Yet this was a great, quirky, different and considerate book that perhaps should be in every cook's collection - if not just for novelty value. Although there are many good, honest recipes here that could provide nutritious, affordable food for the entire family. So, please miss, can we have some more (recipes)?

Originally Published in 2007, Good Old Fashion School Dinners has been republished in an e-book format. Although this is filled with recipes from the UK, of which I have just begun to learn from some of my Facebook friends I so wanted to review it because it made me think of my own school days and the meals that were served. When in Grade School we always wondered why whenever they mowed the lawn there was spinach served the next day? What was that meat they served every Friday, not to mention who was brave enough to eat it?

Out side of those questions and the fact that the dishes are best known in the UK by the names given, some were often served here by a different name. Now the Macaroni Cheese, Chicken Pie, Meatballs, Pineapple Upside-down Cake, Rice or Tapioca Pudding and Apple Pie are pretty much universal, the others might seem a bit odd to some. Let me assure you they are tasty all the same. I first served my family Toad in the whole a few months back and my family enjoyed it so much I began asking for other recipes that my friends outside the United States grew up on. The Spam Fritters were next and went over rather well. I must admit the Treacle Tart, Cottage Pie and the Sausage Plait were better received. I went on to try the Liver and Bacon using Calf's Liver and found it was delicious. As was the Cornflake Tart. I look forward to trying even more of these unusual recipes.

If you are not from the UK or familiar with the metric measurements it is easy to get a hold of a conversion chart. Luckily as I said have many friends who send recipes that need to be converted and have gotten to where I can automatically do it without having to look it up every time. The recipes will take you back through the years to your childhood so enjoy, but be sure not to miss the second bell and be lat to class.

Robert Fenton and his mother are taken in by the austere Miss Pauline Bunn. A life of drudgery stretches ahead for both of them and, as a Very Naughty Boy, Robert soon makes the acquaintance of “Arabella”, the cane which Miss Bunn hangs behind his bedroom door. The fanatically religious Miss Bunn allows Robert out only to go to school, where beatings are frequent, and to Bible Class at the local Church. He is accompanied by attractive Jane Gilmore, who is believed by Miss Bunn to be a good moral influence on the boy. However, Jane proves to be a minx who teases Robert and leads him on. Jane and her friend Amy Keeler enjoy getting Robert into trouble. Things are not as they seem when their Bible Class teacher finds them in the girls’ toilet together. But Robert is blamed and punished publicly. Jane’s parents are horrified when they catch their daughter and Robert in a state of undress. The errant pair are spanked soundly on their bare buttocks and forbidden to see each other again. After Robert falls ill, he is sent to a Convalescent Home by the local authority. But a mistake is made about his age and he finds himself in a ward where the discipline imposed by the nurses and the toilet regime are more appropriate for younger children. He attempts to escape, but is brought back by the police and chastised in front of the other patients and the Board of Guardians. Eventually Robert succeeds in getting away from Miss Bunn’s tyranny. He becomes a servant to a fading film star and then lands a role in a TV soap opera. But he is still treated like a Very Naughty Boy!

Good Information, but Expensive and Brief

This book contains useful information on utilizing good bacteria, like the cultures contained in yogurt, to increase your level of health. The are interesting chapters on using probiotics to treat cancer and autism, but I was more interested from the standpoint of maintaining healthy digestion. If you have taken any antibiotics, there is a good chance that your intestinal flora is out of whack and that probiotics can help.

In any event, my only complaint is that the information is rather sparse in terms of general health questions given the price of the book. I was happy with the product descriptions in the last chapter, which I found helpful in selecting the right product for my personal use.
