A Joyful and Practical Book To Help Encourage Creative Play

Anyone who works with children in any capacity, especially parents and teachers, should get a hold of this epic resource.

Not only is this aptly named "Giant" book stuffed to the brim with great ideas of creative play and projects for every age, but the organization of the material allows for easy cross-referencing. You can look up ideas for toddlers, but if you get into the wonderful section on how to put together a weekly or monthly Craft Activity Night, for example, it comes with a long list of potentially perfect activities from all over the book and a range of ages. Specific fresh ideas for how to actually do a specific kind of project are always bundled with extra materials: so, if Bobbi Conner is suggesting you sing silly songs with your kids, you can be sure she will give you a thorough and well-rounded list of songs fitting that description.

Also, this book does a wonderful job in giving adults the background reasoning on why creative play isn't just a frill but a necessity for young children. In this way, the book reminds me of Jim Trelease's beloved "Read-a-Loud Handbook." You will be more inspired and passionate about trying some of these fun ideas because it will be so abundantly clear that you're building lifelong skills at the same time.

Great Resource for Parents, Teachers & Camp Counselors

I gave this book to the elementary schools my grands attend. The teachers were very appreciative for such great ideas as everyone winds down the school year. I would also recommend this book to camp counselors, playground supervisors, and to anyone else who wants fun activities for ages 6-12.

This wonderful book has so many ideas that there is absolutely no reason to ever be bored again as a kid. So, the next time your child says, "I'm bored" ask him/her to pick out a page and then go do it. Fabulous book. One I wish I'd owned when my own kids were young, however, am pleased I have it for when grandchildren come visiting.

About the Author

Jesse Varsalone has been teaching for 18 years. He taught high school for eight years, five in the Baltimore City Public Schools. After teaching high school, Jesse started teaching computer classes at the Computer Career Institutes at Johns Hopkins University and Stevenson University. He currently teaches online as an adjunct professor at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. Jesse holds a number of certifications in the IT field.

Matthew McFadden researches, develops, and instructs network intrusion investigations. Matthew has spent several years in the field of information technology specializing in information assurance and security, network intrusion, malware analysis, and forensics. Matthew has performed research projects, consulted, and presented, and has worked in network administration. He also holds industry IT certifications.

Computer Anti-Forensics and Forensics 101

Jesse Varsalone hits this one out of the park. Jesse leverages his depth of knowledge and experience with his years of teaching experience to get right down to business.
He leads the computer forensics/hacker n00b through the nuts and bolts of vulnerabilities. He jumps right in and demonstrates in the first 3 pages what a hacker can do using descrete vulnerabilities and keeps up the pace throughout the rest of the book. He always demonstrates how vulnerabilities are exploited and what to do to stop them or discover them.
Jesse is a seasoned CF professional and instructor and this is obvious in the logical step by step manner the book is written. I found the explanations of the "how and why" of safely and legally testing the techniques he covers quite relevant and important to newcomers. These also serve as good reminders for those who may dabble in hacking and penetration testing.

The Table of Contents reads like a syllabus for a anti-forensics and computer security college class. It starts with the basics of Windows exploits and how to defend against them and steps the reader through each attack like a lab exercise, and then steps the reader though the defensive tools. This cookbook, lab-type presentation enables the reader to see and do the attack and understand the defense. The reader can literally follow the steps on their own test setup.
At just shy of 400 pages it isn't a enormous 10 pound tomb of knowledge, but a readable, doable guide of the Black Arts of computer hacking and anti-forensics.

This book would serve well as a college text for a Basic Anti-Forensics or Intro to Computer Security courses. It provided up-to-date, relevant CF concepts and exercises that are the foundation for a computer security or Computer Forensic tech. This is also a handy reference of the more common exploits, how they are utilized, detected and thwarted.

I found the contents to be current and timely, combining discussions of the newest techniques with old school hacks that are still relevant today. The content is tight and without extra fluff and easy to either browse through or to follow page by page, front to back.

Pulls you far enough to get into it, then moves on.

I had mixed feelings when I began to digest the content of this book. Some parts of it are great, step-by-step tutorials on how to do various tasks, such as installing kon-boot. Other aspects made this a sign to point you in the direction, like the SQL section, is very vague. Overall, this is mainly a tour guide, he won't tell you all you might want to know, but it goes into enough depth is several different topics that you should have some understanding, and also know where to go from this book, to more specific ones. I did learn a lot, really I did. But it was so spread out over a varity of topics, each topic I didn't learn to much about. So this is good for broad understanding of various concepts, which I belive was the goal of the book, now I know for example, that now I am more prepared for other more specific books.

Really good reference for someone experienced in the topic who wants to improve their skills

If there ever was a book that should not be judged by its title, Defense against the Black Arts: How Hackers Do What They Do and How to Protect against It, is that book.

According to Wikipedia, black art can refer to:
* art forms by persons of African descent
* black magic
* optical effect in stage magic
* typesetting
* process that is mysterious or difficult to master or describe

Even if one uses the definition in The New Hacker's Dictionary of "a collection of arcane, unpublished, and (by implication) mostly ad-hoc techniques developed for a particular application or systems area", that really does not describe this book.

The truth is that hacking is none of the above. If anything, it is a process that is far from mysterious, and rather either to describe. With that, the book does a good job of providing the reader with the information needed to run a large set of hacking tools.

Defense against the Black Arts is another in the line of hacking overview books that started with the first edition of Hacking Exposed. Like Hacking Exposed, the book walks the reader through the process of how to use hacking tools and how to make sense of their output.

Defense against the Black Arts is written for the reader with a good technical background who is looking for a nuts and bolts approach to ethical hacking. Its 14 chapters provide a comprehensive overview of the topic, with an emphasis on Windows.

But for those looking for an introductory text, this is not the best choice out there. The book is written for the reader that needs little hand-holding. This is in part due to its somewhat rough around the edges text and the use of more advanced hacking tools and techniques.

By page 4, the author has the reading downloading BackTrack Linux. BackTrack is a Ubuntu distro which has a focus on digital forensics and penetration testing. BackTrack is currently in a 5 R1 release, based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Linux kernel 2.6.39.4. BackTrack comes with a significant amount of security and hacking tools preloaded, which the authors reference throughout the book.

After showing how to install BackTrack, chapter 1 shows how to log into Windows without knowing the password. Much of that is around the Kon-Boot tool, which allows you to change the contents of the Windows kernel in order to bypass the administrator password. Tools like Kon-Boot though will only work when you have physical access to the machine.

Chapter 3 gets into the details of digital forensics and highlights a number of popular tools for forensic imaging. While the book provides a good overview of the topic, those looking for the definitive text on the topic should read Digital Evidence and Computer Crime: Forensic Science, Computers and the Internet.

Chapter 5 deals with web application penetration testing. The authors describe a number of tools that can be used to assess the security of web sites, and offer ways to attempts to manipulate data from a web page or web application.

Chapter 13 - Hack the Macs - is one of the shorter chapters in the book and should really be longer. One of the reasons pen testers are increasingly using Macs is that the newer Macs run on the Intel platform, and can run and emulate Windows and Linux. The increasing number of tools for the Mac, and significant Mac vulnerabilities, mean that the Mac will increasingly be used and abused in the future.

But although the design may be sound, the operating system does not prevent people from being swayed into thinking that the malicious software they are downloading is safe. With that, Apple will have to concentrate more on security and vulnerability within their operating system.

The book ends with about 30 pages on wireless hacking. The chapter provides an overview of some of the weaknesses in Wi-Fi technology and how they can be exploited. The chapter focuses on the airmon tool, part of BackTrack that you can use to set your wireless adapter into monitor mode, to see all of the traffic traversing the wireless network.

Remember not to buy this book

It is certainly not worth its price. I was discouraged when I realized I couldn't return mine because I unfortunately filled out a small survey towards the beginning of the book in pen. The book is 270 pages of common sense. The author dwells on things that have no relation to developing a better memory. An entire chapter is devoted to making it clear that when we forget something people don't like us. Another on how eating nutritious foods and exercising is good for memory. Another chapter simply reaffirms us that we should trust our memory, as if we needed a boost of self confidence. More common sense taking a totally neutral stance, a little stress is good but not too much! a little coffee is okay but not too much! etc. I'm sure you can find something better, good luck!

A very thorough book on memory techniques

I've examined many memory-improvement books out there in the market. This book by far is the best-organized , and also the most complete. You can waste your money buying more fancy books or tapes on the subject, or you can save money by buying this book that summarizes all the known techniques in a very useful way. I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer on his assessment of this book.

Impractical

The ideas given in Super Memory are impractical. It introduces many memory aids for your mind. Yet, if you really think about it, instead of remembering these memory aids to remember things, then why don't you just write it down? His book does not teach you how to memorize a list of 100 very random characters like some other books. This book is worth skimming -- in your spare time. I rate it 2 stars.

Incredibly poor

This book is so thin on content as to make it unusable for real development work. The actual number of pages devoted to user-interface software design is TINY. With luck, it might fill out an acceptable overview article in a magazine.
All the rest is fluff. For example, I was appalled by the amount of space the author devoted to a beginner's introduction to C++ concepts and syntax. (That chapter is longer than the one on the use finate state machines in UI implementation...)
Finally, the author's approach to the whole process of UI software design is very ad hoc; it's not a methodology at all, and what he does is certainly not "engineering".
A much better choice is Ian Horrocks' "Constructing the User Interface with Statecharts". It shows a reusable, scalable SOFTWARE ENGINEERING approach to UI software development -- something that Niall Desmond Murphy doesn't seem to understand...

Disappointing

As a software "old hand" in embedded systems for way too many years, I ought to know better than to be taken in by the hype on this book. But, I blew it. This was a waste of money. The examples are misleading, the text is just plain wrong in far too many places, and the direction he takes in instructing is insulting. Then to cap it off, the compiler he wrote the examples for is very old. I have used Borland compilers since Turbo-Pascal days, and I used BC3.1 for years (still have it on one of my systems), but I would not recommend them today as they have been passed by. He obviously has had experience in embedded user interfaces, but this book will not help novices learn the how, where, or why of the subject in a way that they can use for the future. My recommendation is to pass on this one...

This book covers embedded system design without forgetting the original reason for it -- the user. A truly balanced approach to the problems in this domain. Many years worth of hard-won wisdom about embedded system design AND the users of embedded systems. You can learn it from him, or the hard, expensive way. Fun reading for an "old hand", besides.

Worth it's weight in gold

Someone gave me this book my first year of teaching. I have now taught music for 6 years, and have used this book every year. Each song is notated musically, and accompanied by the game and a short introduction as to the origins. I also teach Kindermusik, and can see that many of our activities must have been taken right out of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and although I wish you great luck in finding it for under $100, or at the library, you wont be disappointed if you spend the money.

Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya is a well-recognized spiritual teacher and author who has been practicing Yoga spirituality for the last 40 years. He counts among his numerous admirers Dr. Deepak Chopra, Shambhavi Chopra, Dr. David Frawley, the editorial staff of Hinduism Today Magazine (which has called Acharyaji one of the top three authorities on Vedic spirituality in the world today), and many hundreds of other leading spiritual leaders and teachers. He lived the life of a full-time Hindu monk from 1978-1986, and was initiated as a Hindu priest in India in 1986. He has a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Wisconsin. Absolutely wonderful work. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in this topic. There is not much else like it out there. Very easy to read and yet also very comprehensive. It can be difficult to make sense of ancient cultures and their philosophies. This book helps greatly!

The best thing I got out of this book is the parts about Bhagavan Krishna. It has peaked my interest in the Bhagavad Gita.

If you are a Mack Bolan, Executioner fan you should check out this action novel.

I have been a fan of the Mack Bolan, aka “The Executioner” series for many years but I just started reading the earlier published books in this Mack Bolan series of Don Pendleton’s. This one (San Diego Siege #14 the Executioner) is “an oldie but a goodie” (Published in 1972). Mack Bolan had finished his business in other cities fighting the mafia but is now in San Diego doing some surveillance work.

He is there to not only destroy the Mafia Mob in San Diego, but to also help his old Vietnam commander “Howlin Harlan Winters.” It appears the General had some problems, possibly with working with the local mafia. When Bolan finds his old commander with a hole in his head and the gun on the floor near his right hand, with what looks like a suicide, the executioner and his team go to work to investigate the link between the mob and General Winters. As with every Mack Bolan adventure, there are always a host of people out to get the "executioner."

I never give away too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader. If you are a Mack Bolan (the executioner) fan and have not read this book you should check it out. It is a good read.

Conflict and Conversion> makes the first detailed exploration of Catholic missions to the diverse kingdoms of Southeast Asia and provides a new connective history of the spread of global Christianity to this crossroads of the world.

This volume focuses on three areas which represent the main cultural and religious divisions of the broader region of Southeast Asia: modern-day Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. In each of these areas, missionaries had to engage with a variety of political and economic systems, social norms, and religious beliefs and practices. They were obliged to consider what adaptations could be made to Catholic ritual and devotions in order to satisfy local needs, and how best to counter local customs deemed inimical to the faith, which obliged them to engage with fundamental questions about what it meant to be Christian. Alberts seeks to uncover the conflicts over these issues, and the development of the concept of conversion in the early modern period.
