About the Author
Lawrence Sondhaus is Professor of History at the University of Indianapolis, where he is Director of the Institute for the Study of War and Diplomacy. His previous publications include Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf: Architect of the Apocalypse (2000), Naval Warfare, 1815-1914 (2001), and Strategic Culture and Ways of War (2006).

An Innovative Political and Strategic Overview of World War I

'Prof. Sondhaus's account of the Great War fits it into a more global context than has been customary. In addition to his normal chapters, special sections and numerous side-bars help bring in personal experiences, important developments, or points of contention (e.g., “The Schlieffen Plan,” “The Reparations Controversy,” etc.). Despite this, the work still manages to display the traditional Anglo- and Western Front bias of most accounts in English. It also fails to take into account the flood of recent work on the war, from the roles of many of the smaller powers (e.g., Italy, Romania, the Ottomans), to the co-evolution of tactics and technologies that caused the horrors at the Front, the “military revolution” in the armies, particularly the British, through 1918, nor the intellectual bankruptcy of the German high command. World War I: The Global Revolution is a useful read for the serious student of the war.'

Good, if a bit thick

I've never read much about World War One, and all my previous history classes have only focused on the American side of the conflict. This book told me about the European side. However, the text can be a bit difficult to get through.
