The Chinati Foundation is widely considered one of the world’s most important destinations for experiencing large-scale contemporary art. It was founded by Donald Judd (1928–1994), whose specific ambition was to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape. Chinati is located on 340 acres of desert on the site of former Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas. Construction and installation at the site began in 1979 with help from the Dia Art Foundation, and it was opened to the public in 1986.

This handsome publication is the first comprehensive presentation of the Chinati Foundation’s collection in more than twenty years. The book describes how Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati (and including its two predecessors—his buildings in New York and his residence in Marfa). The individual installations at Chinati are presented in chronological order with stunning photography; these include work by John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, David Rabinowitch, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, as well as Judd himself. His installations at Marfa include 15 outdoor works in concrete and 100 aluminum pieces housed in two carefully renovated artillery sheds. The book also features writings by Judd relating to Chinati and Marfa, and a complete catalogue of the collection.

A great job depicting and amazing place

I traveled to Marfa a few years ago and was blown away. I have been searching for a book that documented Marfa and the Chinati foundation and this book is by far the best. I highly recomend it to anyone. The photography and associated text do a great job of presenting the art and explaining its context.

A keystone in the slippery debate

If you are willing to take a deep dive into the slippery topic of self-deception, then this book is the book for you. The author takes a decidedly philosophical and academic knife to the topic. Usually, I don't like this kind of approach because it's not a "page-turner." In fact, it's a difficult book to read. Thank goodness it's short.

However, given the deep challenges associated with understanding the dynamics of self deception, the author's argument makes more sense because he does a great job outlining the failures of the extant literature before he attempts to reframe the problem, which he does brilliantly. The idea that self deception is not a problem of belief systems but rather an issue of identity; that is, fractures, dissociations, and "disavowals" related to one's identity concept makes perfect sense.

After reading this book, I see the world in an entirely new way. Highly recommended.

i recommend this book for serious students of philosophy, psychology, law, sociology.

it is also a wonderful guide for personal self-examination.

Dr.Fingarette is one of the most brilliant authors i have ever encountered.

About the Author

Ralph H. Petrucci

Ralph Petrucci received his B.S. in Chemistry from Union College, Schenectady, NY, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Following ten years of teaching, research, consulting, and directing the NSF Institutes for Secondary School Science Teachers at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, Dr. Petrucci joined the planning staff of the new California State University campus at San Bernardino in 1964. There, in addition to his faculty appointment, he served as Chairman of the Natural Sciences Division and Dean of Academic Planning. Professor Petrucci, now retired from teaching, is also a coauthor of  General Chemistry with John W. Hill, Terry W. McCreary, and Scott S. Perry.

 

William S. Harwood

Bill Harwood received his B.Sc. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Purdue University in 1986. He is currently a Professor of Science Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. Previously, Dr. Harwood was at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, College Park. In his current role, Dr. Harwood continues to teach chemistry and conduct research in chemical education. He has received several awards for teaching excellence. Dr. Harwood is also active in the American Chemical Society and the Division of Chemical Education and was a consultant to AAAS project 2061. He is involved in the science reform efforts at both the pre-college and college levels. His research focuses on how best to use technology to improve learning in chemistry.

 

F. Geoffrey Herring

Geoff Herring received his B.Sc. and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, both from the University of London. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemistry of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Dr. Herring has research interests in the area of biophysical chemistry and has published over 100 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Herring has undertaken studies in the use of information technology and interactive engagement methods in teaching general chemistry with a view to improving student comprehension and learning. Dr. Herring has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 30 years and has twice been the recipient of the Killam Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

 

Jeffry D. Madura

Jeffry D. Madura received his B.A. from Thiel College and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Purdue University, He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Madura’s research interests are in the area of computational chemistry and biophysical chemistry,  and he has published over 70 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Madura has undertaken studies in the use of technology and interactive personal response systems in teaching general and physical chemistry with the goal of improving student comprehension and learning.  Dr. Madura has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 15 years and has been the recipient of a Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.

A Decent Ordinary Chemistry Textbook

I have enjoyed using this textbook. The text is not hard to read, and generally is extremely clear and easy to understand. It has plenty of examples, which make learning the advanced material much easier. Also the examples are related to the homework problems. The homework problems include "Integrated Problems," "Project Problems" and "Advanced Problems" These problem sets combine concepts found in multiples sections and previous chapters. I have only done a few of them, and while challenging they actually are pretty fun. Every chapter has at least 1 or 2 sections that discuss applications of the theories and principles that were taught in the section. Engineering students will appreciate these sections, as they are very practical and give a preview of the applications of chemistry.

buyers seeking the textbook used should know that they probably will not have access to online media material included. But I rarely take advantage of the online material.

I only used it for a general intro to chemistry course in college and quite frankly it wasn't used very much except for solving homework problems. Lectures seemed good enough but if you take inside the content is good and well explained. Just was possibly a bit much for my intro class.

tedious book

I had to use this book in a class at my junior college. I ended up switching books and teachers as well. This book is much drier than then most of the stuff their offering at universities. It may have been the best choice 5-10 years ago though..
