Better Than Twilight...

I never read Vampire Breath as a kid, but now I kind of wish I did. At first I wasn't really interested in a vampire story, but the beginning drew me in and put this one on my favorites list. The prose is quite competent and evokes the eerie setting well. The story involves two kids who find a vampire sleeping in the basement and end up transported to his eerie castle in the past. Lots of description serve to amp up the creepiness a bit and give the text some credibility. The scenes were interesting and well-written and I would recommend this one.

Like Thomas Hardy, who created his fictional Wessex out of his native Dorset, and William Faulkner, who used Lafayette County, Mississippi, as the basis for his imaginary Yoknapatawpha County, O'Hara transformed his hometown of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding anthracite coal region into one of literature's great fictional landscapes. Setting five novels and more than 50 stories in what he called his "Pennsylvania Protectorate," O'Hara recorded with great honesty the lives of Gibbsville's inhabitants--from Polish coal miners and Irish Catholic shopkeepers to the Protestant country club set. Editor Bruccoli, who championed O'Hara as one of America's great short writers in his biography The O'Hara Concern ( LJ 9/15/75), has gathered into one volume 55 Gibbsville stories written over a 30-year span. Included are some of O'Hara's most famous tales, including "The Doctor's Son," "Imagine Kissing Pete," and "The Bucket of Blood." Since many of these stories are drawn from previous collections, libraries already owning such anthologies as The Collected Stories of John O'Hara ( LJ 4/15/85) might want to consider this an optional purchase. Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to a writer who has been unjustly ignored.

Quite a Collection!

I am from O'Hara's Collieryville and can recall English / Literature teachers in high school saying: There's not a John O'Hara among the lot of you!

Well, who was/is John O'Hara, why should I care, and if he's so great why aren't we reading his stuff in class? All good questions with very good answers when you get into this collection which contains some first-class 'adult' themes which clearly kept John out of the school library!

This is a collection of short stories. One of my favorite genres. Sometimes the story is so short it can end in 17 or even fewer pages and be finished like the slam of a door or leave you wandering down your own 'what if' trails. Continuing some of these to 200+ would be a disservice to storyline and reader alike.

This collection is a great look at the Schuylkill County coal region during the period my grandparents grew up in and during the younger days of my parents. The argot is spot on if yiz know wut I mean.

The chararcters are human. Perhaps too human at times. The era is just after the Great War and into the Great Depression. It opens with a longish story set during the time of the Spanish Flu pandemic and is just too real at times. I can actually visualize many of the roads travelled, literally, and see the locales under discussion even if many of them were mostly ruins when I was younger. This helps bring alive the stories from many relatives as to what a 'swell place' this used to be to hang out.

I'm hooked. I'm looking for more O'Hara and plan to start on this guy called Updike. I advise you to join the reading party if you like true realism in literature from that period. It's better than F. Scott Fitzgerald IMO.

John O'Hara deserves to be more widely known. Nobody writes conversational English better than O'Hara. Excellent writing, good yarns and memorable characters in a small town that could be anywhere. Excellent.

An American great

John O'Hara captured a snapshot of a time and place and preserved it in the pages of his stories. His writings are of great interest to me as they are set in the coal region of Northeast PA where I live. O'Hara's writing is crisp and his depiction of life in small patch towns spot on. The characters are unforgettable. He was a genius.

Kissing Mr Right

Three and a half stars.

I got this book as part of the Kindle First program. I enjoyed reading it. It's a nice, relaxing, light romantic comedy. It's the kind of book that I can totally see as a "chick flick". It's very reminiscent of "Sweet Home Alabama".

The female lead, Kendall, is so focused on advancing her career as a serious news reporter that she doesn't give any time to her love life. And when Ty Bishop enters the picture, although she's very attracted to him, she knows he will only distract her from her career goals of joining a morning news show in New York City. Will she give true love a chance?

Overall this book was pretty good. It's by no means unique though. It's a typical romantic comedy. Other reviewers commented on how "deep" they thought this book was and referenced the childhood emotions Kendall and Ty struggled with in regards to their parents. But to me, "daddy issues" are a bit cliche. All that being said however, I still enjoyed this book.

There is one sex scene that's moderately descriptive, so just a head's up if that bothers you.

Overall, a nice read. Glad I picked it as my Kindle First. For free it was a worthwhile read. But I honestly don't think it's worth the $5.99 the author would normally charge, because as I said, although I enjoyed it, I don't think it was anything super special.

LOVED THIS romantic comedy.

Everyone loves a great Romantic Comedy—When I started, I couldn't put it down. Kendall is a smart over worked heroine with a love-life on hold for her career. She's is a woman with a dream of changing the world and telling important stories, and that takes long hours. She's become puppet of her crafty boss—who wants TV Ratings and Kendall's her girl for that. In order to get what Kendall hopes will be her big chance—a real environmental and community impact story to research on the side--Kendall agrees (with much arm twisting) to be the DATE for a TV dating show where the dates are chosen for her called: ‘It’s Raining Men’. SWOON. Her 'real ' news story develops in such cool and yes, often hilarious ways, but even there Kendall is in deep and in danger thanks to secrets surrounding the story she’s trying to expose.

This is not simply boy meets girl, they kiss and laugh, the end. There are really good layers in here and it’s a bigger story of jobs, family and love/life choices that I think so many can relate to. The ‘more’ is very refreshing. Of course, Ty is the manly hero with his own secret past, a family he’s misaligned with and yet he’s such a good guy he is torn over loyalty to them and giving Kendall her dreams as he falls deeply in love. Of course, since the title is Kissing Mr. Right, we all know there’s romance and kissing which is, in fact, awesome! Love how these two, who should maybe not fall in love at all finally get together. Because of course…yes, you should fall in love no matter what. Highly Recommend!

Delightful contemporary romance!

Kissing Mr. Right was a delightful read! Kendall is a reporter desperate to advance her career in a meaningful way despite the crazy stories assigned to her. Ty is far more than a hunky landscaper and has a PhD to prove it. What Kendall thinks she wants becomes a little less clear as her feelings for Ty grow. The chemistry between them and the entertaining cast of characters make this a heart-warming story about discovering who you really are and where home is. Loved it! I'm hoping this is a series! This one is definitely going on my keeper shelf.

I happened upon Kenny Sultan quite by chance when I was taking a fingerstyle class at the National Guitar Workshop. The teacher threw me a copy of this book to work on because I was too advanced for the beginners class I was in, but not at the level to check out any of the fingerstyle seminars with Martin Simpson, Paul Rishell etc.. In any case, my first love is the blues and ragtime, and those couple of days with this book had me hooked. When I got home I went right out and bought this book and, at the risk of sounding sappy, it changed my life. My work schedule prevented regular jam sessions and strumming chords was boring as hell with no one to jam with. This book took me to a whole new level of playing and has brought great joy to those hours between work and bed. The cassette is invaluable, the tunes soulful and you even get to dip a little toe into some ragtime and slide licks. You will quickly want to find other books by Kenny and probably start scouring the guitar shops for a National or Dobro. This is easily the finest fingerstyle blues guitar book I have ever seen. And the author is not only a helluva player, but a fine gentleman, too. A letter I sent him asking for some tips on double time bass runs was answered in a week.

Very cool blues with great instruction!

Kenny Sultan makes learning to play blues guitar fun and enjoyable. The book comes with a CD so you can hear how each piece sounds. Kenny plays each song twice. First time it's slow so you can begin learning by playing along. Then again, at regular speed, which is good to work up to.
Kenny gives short explainations with each piece that I find helpful. The book shows music in standard notation and TAB. It starts with easier pieces in the beginning. You'll meet some good old time blues players and get a chance to try slide guitar at the end. This is a GREAT book!

Easy to follow -- Good tunes

While I haven't put much time into practicing, it's not hard to see why this book and CD get great reviews. Sulton starts you out with some basic moves, and progresses into some great tunes that will definitely impress you and your friends. His teaching style is very laid back, and his pace is easy going.
I would say that anybody who has the time to practice these songs, regardless of your playing level, will master them quickly. And, by using what you've learned here, it would be easy to improvise and come up with some similar tunes of your own.

Alfredo Serafini

Alfredo Serafini is a freelance software consultant, currently living in Rome, Italy. He has a mixed background. He has a bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering (2003, with a thesis on Music Information Retrieval), and he has completed a professional master's course in Sound Engineering (2007, with a thesis on gestural interface to MAX/MSP platform).

From 2003 to 2006, he had been involved as a consultant and developer at Artificial Intelligence Research at Tor Vergata (ART) group. During this experience, he got his first chance to play with the Lucene library. Since then he has been working as a freelancer, alternating between working as a teacher of programming languages, a mentor for small companies on topics like Information Retrieval and Linked Data, and (not surprisingly) as a software engineer.He is currently a Linked Open Data enthusiast. It Lives up to "Learn by Doing" approach

I work as a search engineer implementing solutions for various clients, i started on Solr about a year ago, so i picked up Apache Solr Beginner's Guide to make my understanding of Solr well rounded. I am a hands on person and do not settle for theory. From the beginning Apache Solr Beginner's Guide lived up to the motto of "Learn by Doing". Firt chapter quickly introduces you to kick tires with Solr and start playing. Second chapter to index PDF files, which tend to be bigdeal for lot of beginners for some reason i see a lot of questions on this topic on Stackoverflow. Next chapter goes on to introduce basic search based on large test data indexed from Wikipedia style data. Once the basics are set your footing they change gears and put on to what we all developers really care - customizations by extending search , faceted search, distributed search with usecases . Examples of Customization like detecting language with Tika are very intuitive . They gave huge collection of client integration examples including open source carts like Magento e-Commerce. I wish there is more material on customizations with examples, but they prepare you well for you in that path to explore. I highly recommend any Beginner to start their Solr learning with this book to complement lot of material out there on the internet. Great place to start

This book is way more than just a beginner's guide. We are using a hosted Solr solution at work and I must say this is the best intro to Solr I've come across so far - even though I've been using Solr already a bit, I've learned a great deal from this book and it's example based approach. Open source projects can be really hard to get started with because the community moves so fast, I wish I would have had this book when I got started.
The book is structured very well in a clear and concise manner. Each chapter starts with a practical problem like 'Indexing with local PDF files' or 'Using faceted search' it then first discusses the problem and the Solr way of solving it. After that the author walks you through the commands so you can test the solution immediately yourself. I highly recommend reading this book next to a computer so you can fire up your terminal any time and get the most out of its 'learning by doing' approach. Because of the book's example based structure it has also been a good resource for me to go back to at work - the Solr documentation lacks examples almost entirely, which makes this book a great desk companion.

Apache Solr is an open source full-text search server written in Java. This book is billed as being for anyone who has the will to learn.
The author asserts that no prior programming experience is required. In my opinion, prior programming knowledge is a necessity to follow along.On page 68 of the book the author states that "both XML and json are widely used on Internet applications and mashups, so I suggest you become familiar with both of them." One can only be fully familiar with these afore-mentioned technologies only when one has some sort of programming knowledge. Knowledge of using the command prompt is also important.

Other than that I think this is an awesome book that demonstrates the limitless possibilities one can venture into using Apache Solr. Even after completing this book I find myself going through it again so as to familiarize myself more with Apache Solr. There are a lot of topics covered in this book. These include among others:

- How to install Apache Solr
- Using faceted search
- Working with Multiple Entities, Multicores, and Distributed Search
- Collecting the paintings data from DBpedia
- Indexing with Local PDF Files

The positive to take away from this book is that it is written in a manner that is easy to understand. So there is no need to have a dictionary close by. It is written in a practical manner. You get to see how covered concepts are applied. If you are focused enough you will be just fine in following along.
