I waited for this book a long time the wait was worth it.The book is first class.The book covers german police battalions from the invasion of poland,to the start of the stalingrad campaign july 1942.The book is well researched. Footnotes are at the end of the chapter,not at the end of the book(I like that) The other thing that i like is its readability.The german police is a confusing organization some units were wiped out. Others were combined to form other units. Still others were reassigned,some place else.This book really is informative it cuts through all the red tape.You can read this book and understand what is happening in poland and russia.I would give this book 6 stars,but it doesnt go that high. This book is a must to explain the german police involvement in mass murder and the holocaust.

I love this series

I love this series. I've purchased each book the moment I saw they were available (upon starting with the first ~6 episodes completed). The classic Space Opera where against all odds we have incremental victories that show to never give up, and always strive against the enemy.

Why only 3 stars? While the book started on an amazingly cool high note, I couldn't help but feel that it started on a high note because we had a few negative elements coming. I was right. In fact, I unfortunately predicted in my own mind the 2 events almost perfectly--and frustratingly. I'm okay with the one major character dyeing if necessary, but it seemed like was overly naïve leading to the result, and it felt kind of forced.

However, I have an even larger issue, when combined with above, left me asking if I wanted to keep reading this series. Unfortunate but true. I will state that I'm going to keep going, I just can't say now, but I'm not super fond of having overly contrived situations like this.

I'm more disappointed with the issue around the scout at the end. Really?

I was dreading the thought that the Jung would get one of the jump drives, but feared we were on the path--there was far too much foreshadowing. My immediate thought was that the loss of that scout was far more dangerous than anything else happening in the battle. Why didn't they immediately do everything in their power to track the battleship and destroy it in route, or minimally when it came back out of warp (wherever?). Again, this felt like a contrived situation to lead to more tensions in the next novels.

Also, in addition to any kind of self-destruct, I'd think they would have multiple layers of such capability--including some kind of mechanism that destroyed the module upon incorrect disassembly, etc. I would think that no level of defensive technology would be too harsh considering the absolute game changing risk of letting this technology fall into the hands of the enemy.

Fantastic addition, but strongly predictable twists and unresolved plot points

This is the first book in this series that I have reservations about. There has been a continuing theme that the major plot points get resolved in each book. There might be a couple of smaller bits carried from one book to the next, but by and large the immediate issues get wrapped up and, in the end, the characters are planning the next phase of their journey. There also have been major twists in regards to who is on what side, and in what capacity -- Tug and Dumar's real identities, for example, were pretty hard to have predicted early on.

Instead of unforeseen twists with characters like there were in previous books, now there are completely unforeseeable revelations, mostly with technology. Keeping me guessing with multiple possibilities is much better than throwing one brand-new, not-previously-alluded-to change into the story.

In some instances, the foreshadowing is way too strong. From the fate of the Jump Sub, to the old man on Cetia, to the traitor at the end. It was all too easy to see ahead of time. The blank-stare bit was painful to read because so much attention was drawn to it. There was also a lot of Pentaurus "filler" with needless and mostly emotionless death. The nanite revelation seems like a last-minute plot device to counter the predictability with completely unknowable one-off players.

There wasn't a lot of character work in this episode. Tug went backwards, Dumar is now one-dimensionally trustworthy, and Telles is just an everyday ground pounder with the vocabulary to match. Naralena had a lot of opportunity to shine that wasn't taken advantage of, and the Ghatazhak are no longer invulnerable killing machines. What happened to Jung weapons bouncing right off, and six soldiers taking over a moon base unaided, through the launch ports? Hell, even Tug managed to take a few of them out when previously on Takara they could only be killed by danger-close artillery.

And, perhaps most frustratingly, nothing of importance was wrapped up at the end. This should more accurately be called Episode 13, Part 1.

Yes, I will be picking up the next episode immediately when it's released. But I hope it's more engaging than this volume. Mr. Brown, this series has been phenomenal! I hope mine and others' criticisms are taken constructively, as they are meant to be. I couldn't do what you do without second-guessing myself to death -- this is at least the 12th revision of this review alone. I would lose my mind trying to write entire books.

Weakest of the Series

This current 13 volume projected to go 15 volume series has has, before, one weak book - the black hole one. Book 13 is another weak entry in the series but for a different reason. The black hole book was a bit of a drag. This one not at all but the characters are getting so numerous that the sharp focus we had on the characters before is lost due to being diffuse.

Yet that's not only acceptable but inevitable in a series of this length. The problem here is that the two central characters, Nathan and Tug have gone from dedicated to mission do what's needed people to wavering weak whiners who hesitate over difficult decisions and thus lose the initiative.

There is no way I can go into any details without spoilers which I detest so let me just finish up by saying I was sorely let down here by the results of these two main characters losing out. In some ways, Tug's behavior is explainable in not wishing to start a major conflict but unrealistic. Nathan's flub is not only a major one but also unbelievable given his character in the previous books.

I'm going to guess that Brown has some sort of major plot device in Books 14 or 15 to 'save' Nathan's error but still, that he needs saving for being so indecisive put a major pall on this book. Tug's position at the end of the book is also a bit frustrating but also somewhat less

In sum, not a bad book but not up to the quality of the series.

About the Author

Dr. Hokey Min is the James R. Good Chair in Global Supply Chain Strategy in the Department of Management at the Bowling Green State University. He was Professor of Supply Chain Management, Distinguished University Scholar, and Founding Executive Director of the Logistics and Distribution Institute (LoDI), the UPS Center for World-wide Supply Chain Management, and the Center for Supply Chain Workforce Development at the University of Louisville. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Management Sciences and Logistics from Ohio State University. His expertise includes global logistics strategy, healthcare supply chains, closed-loop supply chains, e-synchronized supply chains, service benchmarking, and supply chain modeling. He has published more than 170 scholarly articles in various refereed journals including European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Journal of the Operational Research Society, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Transportation Journal, and Transportation Research. He recently authored a book titled Healthcare Supply Chain Management: Basic Concept and Principles. This series of conference began in 1983 and is jointly organized by the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore). First of all, I want to thank Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman A*STAR who kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour to give th the Opening Address amidst his busy schedule. I am delighted to report that the 13 ICBME has more than 600 participants from 40 countries. We have received very high quality papers and inevitably we had to turndown some papers. We have invited very prominent speakers and each one is an authority in their field of expertise. I am grateful to each one of them for setting aside their valuable time to participate in this conference. For the first time, the Biomedical Engineering Society (USA) will be sponsoring two symposia, ie “Drug Delivery S- tems” and “Systems Biology and Computational Bioengineering”. I am thankful to Prof Tom Skalak for his leadership in this initiative. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Prof Takami Yamaguchi for organizing the NUS-Tohoku’s Global COE workshop within this conference. About the Author

Natalie Savage Carlson is fondly remembered as the author of the much-loved Orpheline series and Surprise in the Mountains. Born in Virginia, Ms. Carlson later lived in Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and the Pacific Northwest. She eventually settled in Florida prior to her death.

Garth Williams's classic illustrations for the Little House books caused Laura to remark that she "and her folks live again in these pictures." Garth Williams also illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and almost one hundred other books.

A Heartwarming Story

Armand is a hobo who lives in Paris, under a bridge. He begs and does odd jobs for money to take care of himself and buy food. One day he finds a mother and her three children in his "home", under the bridge. At first he is gruff and unhappy about sharing the bridge, but in time he begins to like and help care for this poor homeless family. As Christmas nears, the children ask for nothing except a home of their own and Armand comes up with a plan to make their wish come true. Natalie Savage Carlson has written a beautiful, sensitive story full of humor, insight and wisdom. With fast paced, interesting scenes, young readers will be able to identify with the characters of the children in the story and begin to understand the meaning of family and the rewards of giving and accepting help from others. Perfect for children aged 9-12, this is also a great read-aloud book the entire family can enjoy and discuss. The Family Under the Bridge is a thoughtful, heartwarming story and Ms Carlson deserved all the awards this book won.

A heartwarming story

Natalie Savage Carlson perfectly illustrates what it means to be a family in this heartwarming book. The book is set in Paris in the early 1900's. It explores the world of hoboes and homeless people, a topic which children usually have little experience with. Armand is a homeless man who lives a solitary life under a bridge over the Seine River. He faithfully avoids children, calling them starlings, and saying they will steal your heart if you aren't careful. One day he arrives back home under the bridge, only to find a group of starlings sleeping in his spot. He tries his best to keep them out of his heart, but they work their way in and call Armand their grandpa. The importance of family is the main theme of this book. Armand finds a family and in the end couldn't be happier about it.

Children will love this book. Homelessness isn't something that most children are very familiar with. This unique book will help children understand that even children their age can be homeless. Most homeless people are looked at as being lazy and worthless. This book will show children that some homeless people are just like them, but they are just down in their luck. This is a heartwarming book and deserves attention in the classroom.

A Cheerful and Heartwarming Story

The Family Under the Bridge is about an old crabby hobo named Armand who had nothing but the raged clothes on his back and a little baby buggy with his belongings. He lived in crowded corners and alleys and then in the winter he would live under a bridge. One winter, he was surprised to find three children living under his bridge, and to make matters worse, Armand absolutely hated children. He decided to find another bridge since there were many bridges in Paris, but the children begged him to stay. He softened his heart and decided to stay with the three children and their mother. Armand took the children along with him while he traveled around the streets. It was not long before Armand realized he had gotten himself a family- one he loved with all his heart. They stayed together and Armand soon found a job and got a house for the five of them to live in.
I enjoyed The Family Under the Bridge but it wasn't one of my all-time favorites. It was fairly entertaining. Many parts of the book were exciting and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next, but there were also some slow parts. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book.

The title The Great Human Diasporas implies that this book is a history of human migration, but it is much more. It is a readable, accessible summary of the lifework of Luca Cavalli-Sforza, who has done more than anyone else to reveal the genetic makeup of human populations. Originally written in Italian with Cavalli-Sforza's filmmaker son Francesco, it maintains some qualities of an interview: The Great Human Diasporas is full of anecdotes about the Pygmies with whom Cavalli-Sforza works, the text is frequently personal yet not self-serving, and it clearly shows how he helped tie together population genetics, linguistics, and anthropology to offer a new, non-racist view of human diversity.

Stanford geneticist Luigi Cavalli-Sforza has spent more than 30 years studying genetic variations in DNA samples from the people around the world. The evidence, he says, supports the belief that modern humans originated in Africa, the Middle East or both regions, then spread around the planet. In this lucid report, written with his son Francesco, an educational film director, he uses genetic differences, maps, computer simulations and an analysis of linguistic changes in the world's languages to hypothetically reconstruct the mass migrations of people across continents since modern humans first appeared. The Great Diasporas gives general readers access to the original, interesting interdisciplinary research of Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, a noted population geneticist. (Francesco Cavalli-Sforza is a creator and producer of educational films in Italy.) Although in part a first-person account, this book is mainly a semipopular exposition of what genetic variation among existing populations reveals about the evolution and history of the human species. Focusing on the genetic evidence for ancient dispersions of humankind-hence the title-the book's principal argument is that migrations have had a far greater influence on human genetic diversity than many researchers have supposed. Of the numerous topics covered, the most novel is the employment of genetic data to construct a tree of all human populations and especially to reconstruct the migrations of neolithic farming peoples into Europe. For the most part, the book is lucidly and engagingly written, though the brief discussion of statistical method (namely, principal components analysis) in Chapter 6 assumes previous knowledge and should therefore have been clarified. Recommended for all libraries.

genes, languages, prehistoric human migrations

The most rewarding part of this popular science book is the middle, fifth to seventh chapters, in which Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Professor of Genetics at Stanford Medical School, draws on scientific research in human population genetics, in which he has been a well respected pioneer, to describe the migration of human populations beginning about 100,000 years ago out of Africa until recent times. Because patterns of genetic and linguistic evolution exhibit high intercorrelations--even though their respective elements and mechanics differ--he also cites linguistic evidence for this account of migratory prehistory.
The most valuable contribution of this book to popular understanding is that population genetics provides possibly the best though not sole scientific basis on which to construct the prehistory of human "races." By this evidence, we learn, for example, about the migration of modern Homo sapiens to Southeast Asia and Australia approximately 55,000 to 60,000 years ago or about the spread of Neolithic farmer-cultivators from the Middle East into Europe beginning about 9,000 to 10,000 years ago. I suspect that readers unfamiliar with modern human evolution will find the genetic tree of the world's populations on page 119 intriguing. The diagram shows, for example, that Northeast Asians are more closely related to Europeans than Northeast Asians are to Southeast Asians.
For as rapidly advancing a science as human population genetics, it should not be surprising that some findings are dated. Recent evidence suggests, for instance, that North Asians descended from both southern China populations that gradually migrated northward as well as Caucasian populations that migrated eastward, so that some genetic mixing all across North Asia took place and is the source of the observed racial connections between North Asians and Caucasians.
In other chapters, Cavalli-Sforza tackles related topics somewhat unevenly. His anecdotes about the African pygmies are light and sympathetic. While his description of the hominid line is accurate for the time of publication, there are more insightful not to mention updated accounts now in print. His discussion of the links between genes and culture is engaging and humane but from the standpoint of science, no better than educated. His rejoinder to the controversial The Bell Curve (1994) is scientifically persuasive.

Wandering through human nature

This collaboration between one of the great population geneticists and his filmmaker son promises much but lets down on delivery. The style and content of the book are uneven. Some topics are told in detail and with compelling narrative, particularly the account of L. L. Cavalli-Sforza's work since the 1960s to establish correlations among genetic, linguistic, and archaeological evidence for the history and relationships of the major human groups. Much weaker, however, is his grasp of cultural anthropology, whether in details or in methods. He attempts to convey an impression of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle (predominant through almost all of human history until the last 10,000 years) through extended references to his field research among African pygmies.
Unfortunately, though he is quite sympathetic to the pygmies and their way of life, much of the effect is lost in empty generalities (p. 16: "The forest may look gloomy to us but pygmies feel entirely at home and safe there. It is a place where little that is untoward can happen to them, where danger is limited and life very pleasant."), and his cross-cultural examples come almost exclusively from pygmies or from his personal experience of various Western Europeans. Some points of history, used as examples, are in error (Bede was an English monk who lived from 672 or 673 to 735; not a "sixth-century Irish monk" p. 80).
Cavalli-Sforza also seems to have little knowledge of modern cultural anthropology. Chapter 8 "Cultural legacies, genetic legacies" is particularly weak, treating a number of topics in a very superficial way, showing no knowledge of the huge body of literature on, among others, marriage patterns and the incest taboo, national character, or "cultural evolution". Some of the problems with this book undoubtedly rest with the translator, who seems to have chosen occasionally awkward or confusing phrasings in English.
The book is best when it recounts Cavalli-Sforza's personal experiences and the quest for a unified picture of the relations among human groups. His anecdotes and observations add a human and historical perspective to the story of population genetics, and the technical matters are explained in a comprehensible and even entertaining way. He makes a strong case that differences among human "races" are only skin deep, reflecting adaptation to different climates over the last sixty thousand years, and tells some of his own part in the battle over the IQ and race debate (recently re-ignited with the publication of _The Bell Curve_). One suspects that he would be a great conversationalist at a dinner party, and the portrait of the author (along with his substantial knowledge of human genetics and historical linguistics) is what keeps one reading.

A superb, informed discourse on genetics, race and evolution

Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, a well known and respected geneticist, has teamed up with his son, Francesco Cavalli-Sforza, to write a superb, well-informed, literate, and easy to read book on genetics, race, and evolution. Using the elder Cavalli-Sforza's own research and that of others, the team weaves a story, starting with research on the pygmies, that entertains as well as informs. I am a scientist, but not a geneticist; what I particularly liked about this book is that it spoke in non-jargon language, yet did not shy away from the sophistication and complexity involved in the subject matter. I also liked and applauded the way the authors forthrightly and honestly dealt with subjects of controversy, such as the concept of race, racism, race and IQ, and so forth. Their destruction of the arguments of Jensen, Shockley and Herrnstein that the differences in IQ between Blacks and whites is genetic is beautiful and complete. This is a wonderful book for the layperson as well as the expert who wishes to read outside his or her field.
