So very happy I purchased this wonderful book of designs!

This book is wonderful if you LOVE double-running stitch, or as it is more commonly known, blackwork, embroidery. Many, many patterns taken from museums and private collections by Louisa Pesel, and expertly drawn on graph paper with notes on color and the sampler that the design was taken from. There are patterns for bands of Double Running Stitch, Montenegrin Stitch, Assissi, Satin Stitch, Bargello, and Needlelace. THE SAMPLER ON THE DUST JACKET IS NOT CHARTED NOR DOES NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE IN THIS BOOK!!! I almost did not purchase this fantastic book because of the sampler photo on the cover.as I prefer books that cover 17th century English band samplers. This book does not disappoint - unless you are expecting a wordy dissertation on historical embroidery. This is NOT that kind of tome. This is for the needleworker who wants to stitch her own sampler.The only extensive writing in this book is a two page "Foreword", the rest of "Historical Designs for Embroidery" is nothing but charted designs.
Purchase this book if you can, you will not regret it. It is wonderful!

Ira Katznelson is Columbia University's Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History. Having served as president of the American Political Science Association, he is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He is also the author of Fear Itself and When Affirmative Action Was White.

Mark Kesselman is professor emeritus of political science at Columbia University and co-editor of the International Political Science Review. He is co-author and co-editor of European Politics in Transition and editor of The Politics of Globalization.

Alan Draper is a professor of government at St. Lawrence University. He is the author of Conflict of Interests: Organized Labor and the Civil Rights Movement, 1955–1967 and co-author of The Good Society: An Introduction to Comparative Politics.

Garfield is Doris Silbert Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Smith College, Professor in the Graduate Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Professor of Philosophy at Melbourne University, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the Central University of Tibetan Studies.

Thomas Tymoczko was, until his death, Professor of Philosophy at Smith College. He was editor of New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics.

Absolutely wonderful

This is, technically, an edited version of the first edition. However, it is a radical change from the original, fixing all of the first edition's problems. It is always clear, always helpful, and always entertaining. Even if I had missed class and had an assignment to do, all I had to do was read the chapter thoroughly and it made sense. My professors told us that in case they didn't make sense, to simply turn to the book. And it worked. When I was in doubt, this book was my lifeline. I cannot explain how much I love this book.
However, if you are not a person who enjoys being challenged and enjoys having to mull a problem over in your head, you should never take a class that uses this book. This book was designed to encourage logical thinking - which it does. This book (and the course that used it) entirely changed the way I think. I see the world differently now - logically.

very thick and useful

This is the required text book of my college so I bought it along with some other logic books. Surprised to see that this one is amazingly good!!!!
It is a combination of traditional symbolic logic and cutting edge topics in the area. I love the style of humor in the book, and the thought-provoking
paradox as well!
Best of its kind~ definitely recommend~!

Jack's Back

When you enter the world of Jack Reacher, Lee Child's indomitable ex-MP, you never know what to expect. You can certainly expect exciting action scenes, plenty of fisticuffs, and a large dose of graphic violence. "Tripwire" is no exception. The book is an excellent read. Reacher finds himself caught up in the investigation of a star helicopter pilot missing in action in Vietnam and assumed dead. The boy's parents, in grief for thirty years, send a PI to find Reacher, only to have the PI killed hours after meeting with Reacher. From that point on, the plot twists and turns, always sustaining your interest. Although the ending is easily predictable from the start, it's fun riding along with Child on the inevitable denouement. Hook Hobie is an extremely nasty villain and presents a formidable challenge to Mr. Reacher. His henchman are likewise pretty despicable. Some of the supporting characters are really well written, particularly the victimized Marilyn Stone and her real-estate agent friend, Sheryl. Marilyn displays quite a bit of spit and vinegar and loyalty to her milktoast husband, and plays a hard game with Hobie, for a while. Sheryl, meanwhile, displays a tremendous amount of loyalty to her friend.
A great book but some additional points of concern or discussion. I have found it hard to accept Jack Reacher's obvious inability to function "normally" in the world. A drifter at heart, he doesn't seem to want to belong in anyone's world----he falls in love at the drop of a hat, but is not willing to make any commitments, always seeming self-centered in his inability to be "tied down." He doesn't have a job, he's never had a home of his own, and he avoids reality as it were a plague. While this makes for a dynamic and "legendary" type of hero, it leaves Reacher the man hollow and almost apathetic. Finally, in "Tripwire," his romance with Jodie awakens Reacher to these facts and as the book comes to a close, he starts acting like a human being, thinking of settling down, having a house, etc. I'm sure "Running Blind" will pick this up and hopefully develop it. Jack Reacher is a great character, and I like him, but if he becomes a little more human, it will make him even more likeable.
Disappointments: What happens to Marilyn, Chester, and William Curry. They are pivotal victims in the climactic scene, and at its resolution, we don't know what happens to them. The Stones part in the novel are integral to the plot, and we come to care about what happens---especially to Marilyn. This lack of resolution is downright criminal, Lee!
Also, where did Hobie get his contacts in Hawaii and Hanoi? It's never explained---they just exist. Hobie doesn't seem to have a "worldwide" scam going, just a local one.
And what about Tony, his mysterious "is he gay?" aide? What is their relationship, and how did it begin? Tony intimates he's known Hobie for a long time, but there's never any connection between the two. Tony obviously cares a great deal for Hobie, but there is no development of this relationship.
Maybe minor quibbles, but I feel valid ones.
At any rate, if you've followed Jack Reacher this far, as I have, you will undoubtedly want to read "Running Blind," which I will start soon!

Early Jack Reacher Has Room for Improvement

Unlike most people, I found Lee Child and Jack Reacher only a short while ago and after reading the two most recent Reacher novels, decided to go back and read the earlier ones. This was the first of the earlier ones I have ventured through and I must admit that the ones I read previously were way ahead of this one. The Reacher character is still there. Tough, resourceful and finding trouble at every turn.

However, the story dragged at first as one tried to figure out how two disparite story lines would finally connect and then as it picked up only some of the story was completed.

It's still well written for what is there but this is another author that has clearly gotten his act together as time has progressed. I am not put off however. and will continue to read the earlier efforts and I would recomend that to anyone who has found and enjoyed the character.

Yeah, but he can't iron a shirt

This is the third novel by Lee Child featuring his tough guy hero, Jack Reacher, the previous two being DIE TRYING and KILLING FLOOR. Jack, once a hard-boiled Major in the U.S. Army's Military Police, has been (in all three novels) drifting from here to there to no place in particular, and getting enmeshed in unusual situations that force him to fight assorted scum. His modus operandi makes him a worthy drinking buddy and soulmate of the Clint Eastwood 1970's screen character, Dirty Harry.
In TRIPWIRE, Jack inherits from Gen. Leon Garber (ret.), his former Army commanding officer recently deceased, the task of tracking down for an aged and ailing couple the fate of their pilot son, Victor Hobie, still MIA many years after the Vietnam war in which he flew helicopters. Perceived by the reader, but unbeknownst to Jack, Hobie is now a sadistic, extremely vicious, burn-scarred amputee now operating in the Big Apple as a high end loan shark to financially desperate CEOs. (Or is he?) His specialty is torturing and killing the family members of his debtors should they default. One sweet teddy bear.
Having read the previous two Reacher yarns some time ago, my memory may be suspect. However, I recall the action in those two being more constant and sustained. In TRIPWIRE, the plot develops with more serenity (such as it is), with the tension for the reader being the knowledge that Jack and Hobie will eventually face off against one another - the classic confrontation between the Guy Wearing the White Hat vs. the Guy Wearing the Black Hat. The only thing lacking is the famous Eastwood squint.
Being sufficiently Neanderthal to have loved all of the Dirty Harry films, it's no surprise that Reacher has swaggered into my pantheon of fictional heroes. Child's fourth thriller in the series, RUNNING BLIND, is definitely on my Wish List. However, I remain puzzled and just a little disappointed that Jack, at 38 and supremely self sufficient, remains without a clue when it comes for him to do his ... laundry. I'll bet even Dirty Harry knew how to press and fold a shirt - those were the days when my heroes were made of iron.

About the Author
Roy Gane (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is professor of Hebrew Bible and ancient near eastern languages at the Theological Seminary of Andrews University. He is author of a number of scholarly articles and several books including God's Faulty Heroes (Review Herald, 1996-on the biblical book of Judges), Altar Call (Diadem, 1999-on the Israelite sanctuary services and their meaning for Christians), Ritual Dynamic Structure (Gorgias Press, 2004), Leviticus, Numbers (NIV Application Commentary; Zondervan, 2004), and Cult and Character: Purification Offerings, Day of Atonement, and Theodicy (Eisenbrauns, 2005), as well as the Leviticus portion of the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary on the Old Testament (forthcoming). Dr. Gane and his wife, Connie Clark Gane, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Mesopotamian archaeology at the University of California, Berkeley, have one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth.

Great Commentary

I appreciate the organization of the commentary and the different categories that the complex aspects of the explanations of the material. The "original meaning" section which gives insight into what truths the author is making as well as bringing in the meaning of the Biblical text in the context of the truths the author is conveying. The "bridging contexts" section helps to bring the meaning of the truths conveyed to the first audience, the Jewish nation who had just been released from slavery of 400 years to the present day. The "contemporary significance" section bridges the message of the Bible to give meaning to the reader to the present time. I believe that this book may be dismissed by the readers of today because of the inability to identify with the text and all the rules, regulations and sacrifices. These requirements were to be exercised and put into practice by the nation of Israel, in looking forward to today and we are no longer under law which was fulfilled by Jesus Christ by His death on the cross as the TRUE sacrifice and was validated by His resurrection from the horrible death which He did for those who believe.

A great guide to an often overlooked book

The detailed laws of Leviticus are often passed by with the idea that they have no relevance or meaning for us today. By first helping us to better grasp the meaning of Leviticus for the original recipients of this book Gane helps us to see the relevance of this book both in what it reveals to us about God and in what it means for our daily living. If you are looking for something on Leviticus that is readable and relevant this is a great book.

Great Reading

Pitch Perfect is a very good story. It centers on the development of a "forbidden" relationship between thirty-six year old pitcher Tucker Lloyd, whose career is hanging by a thread because of having one year off due to the surgery, and Emmy Kasper, the first female head athletic trainer of the baseball team. They both have their reasons why they should not be together, but the attraction between them is much stronger than any obstacles.

As a baseball fan and former softball player, I enjoyed reading Pitch Perfect. Author Sierra Dean captured well the essence of the game and the companionship between the players. The most important details were her descriptions of the fields and the atmosphere prior to and during a game. The writing was done so well that I felt like I was in the crowd watching the game. Characters, both main and secondary, were likable and well written. I felt a little sad after the last page because it meant I had to part with them. I grew very fond of them. Another thing I liked about the hero and heroine is the fact that they weren't bogged down by being tormented by their past; they do not have any deep and dark secrets, and that was really refreshing.

The only thing that lessened my reading pleasure was the author's occasional use of unnecessary details. Her in depth description of the new Yankees' stadium and history seemed more like an info dump. Although I agreed with her point completely, going into too much detail tended to really disrupt the pace of the story and slowed it down. I think that if the story had focused less on the not so important details, it would have been better.

All in all I liked Pitch Perfect. I would definitely recommend it as a good read, but especially to those romance readers who like sports romances.

unique and fresh story line

Pitch Perfect is the first book in the new Boys of Summer series by Sierra Dean. This is the first book I have read of hers and it won't be the last. Ms. Dean has a writing style that captures the characters chemistry perfectly and lets the story consume your heart.

Emmy's fought hard to achieve her dream job in a male oriented position. She knows she is going to have to go above and beyond normal standards to prove she is the best at what she does.

Tucker is stepping back up to the plate after an injury benched him last season. He finds himself having to prove to the GM that he is worth keeping around. This is a new position for him. He has been the team star for years and isn't ready to have his career end yet.

Tucker and Emmy need a year with no distractions. They both need to focus solely on what is at stake. However, with these two working so close together and their attraction for each other igniting, they have no chance at keeping a strictly professional relationship.

I know this plot may sound similar to some, especially if you read many sports themed romance books, but I promise this one offers a unique and fresh story line. It is not a book driven by drama and angst. There really isn't even the typical conflict/resolve scenario. It's a heartwarming, beautiful, passionate love story that follows through an entire baseball season. It's clearly written by a true fan who not only knows how to write about a great sport, but succeeded to entwine a great romance into the mix. If you are looking for a lighthearted, funny, extremely sexy story grab this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new sports novel

Tucker is a baseball pitcher from a San Francisco Felons who is almost at the end of his career. After a major surgery, a sports trainer...a very attractive trainer, is brought in to help him recover. Of course, Emmy is not single , but that status does not last very long. Well, working with these players, I would hope I'd be single too. Don't get me wrong, it won't be an easy rode for this couple. There will be a little angst, lots of tension but plenty of flirting, sexy scenes and don't forget...baseball.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new sports novel. It has good humor, very sweet and sexy scenes , and I love the characters. I thought Tucker was a sweetheart. I really enjoyed that he was straight forward with his feelings and attractions for Emmy. And his overall persona just screamed sexy. Emmy on the other hand, wasn't all that sexy to me, even if I went that way =). But what I did find attractive was her independence. I love that she is standing on her own in an unfamiliar city. Anyone that can do that even for a job earns my respect. Ms. Dean did a great job with these two. I like her writing and the voices she gave her characters. She also did an awesome job with the setting. Certain scenes in the book that mentioned places, scenery or neighborhood was pretty accurate.

Ms. Dean created a charming love story between a pitcher, his trainer and their love for the game. Pitch Perfect is an awesome and sweet read.

This book will help you help your team with tough testing issues

Many, if not most, teams that transition to agile development struggle with testing. If the whole team is now responsible for quality, who should be testing what, when? What do testers do until a story is delivered for testing? Do testers need to write code? How do we fit testing into a two-week iteration? If you're helping a team with issues like this, you need This book. I don’t know of any other book to guide coaches and team leaders in helping agile teams learn good ways to succeed with testing and build quality into their software product. It provides everything you need, including a training kit and advice on supplies. It uses a "training from the back of the room" approach for maximum learning potential.
