Hallelujah, I have died and gone to Mayberry!

Everything you ever wanted to know about Mayberry, but didn't know whom to ask. Until now. Painstakingly assembled by two self-proclaimed "Goobers" who have likely forgotten more TAGS tidbits than you or I will ever know, this exhaustive guide is very well-organized and easy on the eye. The first time I read it, during a memorably relaxing trip to the north Georgia mountains, I devoured it in one luxurious sitting, and I still refer to it often. It's that entertaining, addictive and authoritative.
It's important to note, the authors present facts about Mayberry and its denizens as if they were real (and don't try to tell me they aren't!), leaving the task of analyzing the program itself to other scholars. (Such as Richard Michael Kelly, whose own TAGS book is top-shelf.)
The rampant commercialization of all things Mayberry in recent years is more than a little disconcerting. The loving care that went into the making of this book, however, is not in question. For my money, it is the only indispensable reference for those with Mayberry in their blood.

Excellent Reference for the Mayberry Trivia Buff & Fan Fiction Writer

Ken Beck and Jim Clark no doubt eat, drink, and breath the Andy Griffith Show as they must have watched every episode several times with pen and paper in hand to create this book filled with almost every bit of trivia you'd want to know about the show, not to mention their many other books on TAGS. This book is not about the actors, writers, behind-the-scenes activities, or the philosophy of the show, it is a book on the characters, places, and happenings in Mayberry. The episodes of the television show is the only source for this book.

Some reviewers do not think a book recapping the events of the television show is valuable, but it is for trivia buffs and for fan fiction writers. Fans who like to write Mayberry-related stories can find all sorts of helpful tidbits in this book. There is even an episode guide in the back with brief synopses. It is very useful for those who have not seen all the episodes or cannot remember certain details about the characters, places, etc. I have referred to this book several times in writing just one fan fiction story. It is very well-organized and usually offers that little detail I'm looking for. I was very surprised how much information is offered in this book.

Every character is profiled (almost all with photos) from the main ones to those who were only on a short time or intermittently like Ellie Walker, the Darlings, Clara Edwards Johnson, Emmett Clark, Sam Jones, and that adorable Warren Ferguson (with a nice photo I have not seen before). For trivia buffs, there are chapters on "Cops and Robbers," "Codes and Cases," "Mayberry Media" (local newspapers, radio stations, tv stations, tv programs enjoyed by Mayberry residents), "Music of Mayberry," "Contradictions," and more. There is also a helpful map of Mayberry with all the important spots like Myer's Lake, the Duck Pond, the Darling's cabin, and Ernest T. Bass' cave, a town directory and yellow pages for both Mayberry and Mt. Pilot. It also has a quiz. There are scores of b&w photos throughout the book. My only complaint is that the episode guide is not divided up into seasons. Recommended for anyone interested in the characters of TAGS.

Biggest Andy Griffith fan ever...This book has other information that you just don't catch when watching. Also, enjoyed the trivia in it and a little more about the main characters that I may not have known...Great Book!!!

Reads like Dreev's personal notes on the Semi-Slav

Simply put, anything by Dreev on the Meran is going to be spectacular. He has been a leading exponent and theoretician of the Semi-Slav for many years, and is consistently rated among the top 100 chess players in the world.

It needs to be mentioned that the book is rife with typos and inconsistencies. Case in point, flipping to the first page of Chapter 1, the title in big bold letters is: "1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4". Dreev's intention was obviously "1...d5" in this case, but similar mistakes in the text are frustrating because it's not always clear what the move was supposed to be. Also, in many places the notation lapses into Chess Informant conventions (for example, "de" instead of "dxe4"). Maybe the biggest oversight is that Dreev will frequently give sidelines in parentheses without any sort of evaluation or discussion. The reason for giving the sideline is usually pretty clear in context, but that will depend on your skill level (I'm about 2000 USCF).

The best thing I can say about this book is that I'm giving it 5 stars in spite of all the terrible things I've said up to this point. If you're serious about playing the Meran, this book is a must. Two things stand out in particular:

1) Because Dreev was involved in developing many of these lines over the years, he frequently explains how certain lines were tried by Black but fell out of favor for various reasons. These antiquated lines are still given a full analysis. This is extremely useful, and not something you'll find in many opening books. It ensures that the mistakes of the past won't repeat themselves, and it also gives Black many viable (if old) options to avoid the modern main lines.

2) In the Meran, Black typically gains good piece activity in exchange for weaker king safety and pawn structure. The balance between these factors is essential to understand, and Dreev makes the extra effort to explain the position in these more abstract terms. An opening as sharp and concrete as the Meran might lend itself well to pure memorization, but Dreev communicates his deeper understanding very well.

This book probably isn't very accessible for players below 1600 USCF, but anybody willing to put in the work will find a treasure trove of information here. Keep in mind that the 10 of the 12 Meran chapters *start* at moves 13-16 and the anti-Meran chapters start at moves 7-9.

I really like this book because it addresses both sides of a very aggressive opening by White's 1.d4 and Black's aggressive reply by using a semi-slav setup. With transposition the board position becomes known as The Meran.

GM A. Dreev's starting point in this book: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5. He then covers the main lines of the Classical System of 8.Bd3, including the Dreev-Filipenko variation and the Modern System out to 20+ moves. In addition, GM Dreev covers multiple Anti-Meran variations.

In essence, GM Dreev wraps his arms around a highly contested position, mentioned above, and gives out good advice. The layout of the book is easy to follow due to the Table of Contents, page indentations and "bolding", where necessary. The theory explored here is a must-have for correspondence chess and competitive OTB play. My only wish is that I'd found this book sooner. Well done GM Alexey Dreev.

Howard Stern meets John Grisham

The plot of the story isn't bad, and the author does a good job of tying up all the loose ends. However, the over-the-top sexual violence is totally unnecessary to the story and serves only to make one think that the author is apparently some sort of perverted BDSM devotee. The character Natalie is mostly unbelievable, at least in terms of her constant stream of juvenile insults centered around, what else, sex.

Oh, and the correct word is "fledgling," Mr. Kelly.

Not That Good

OK, I will admit I downloaded this book for free, but I honestly wanted to read it and like it. I am from CA and love these types of books, but I was very disappointed. I seriously MADE myself read until the end. It never got better, just filled with stupid sexual jokes that were not witty or funny. It was forced humor.

The story line was almost good and it had such great potential, but fell flat with a couple really unbelievable parts.
I remember hearing once that writers can write anything they want, go as far as they want with a book, but it should be somewhat believable or at least the reader must believe it. That is where this book lost me. It would be like Charles Manson getting out of prison! Sorry NEVER going to happen.

Author has talent just needs to stop with the dumb humor. I actually hate leaving bad reviews. I almost want to apologize.

Was pretty good read until.....

I probably shouldn't review this book as I didn't read much of it. It was pretty good in the beginning, but then descriptions of animal abuse appeared. I didn't read much of that either. I don't know about other readers but I'm tired of the serial killer that the writer creates to commit acts which are written solely for the "ick" factor. If the reader doesn't mind or likes to read about horrible acts, maybe this book is for you, maybe I'll turn to the end to see what happens.
