Could be titled....keep these people at arms length even as friends!

A fun read...while this book is title 13 women you should not marry....it's a lot more than that. I feel blessed to have a gift for reading people. Not everyone can be so lucky. But after you hit a certain age you come to realize there are personality "types" and they can be women or Men that you have met many times with different names but they are not new to you with their quirks. Jill is just like sally that you met four years before. As parents we try to help our sons or daughters choose wisely with who they hang out with date etc.

As I read this book I see why Mary having 6 grandsons would want to write this for all of them.

I must say though that I know many Men that are like these women "all about appearances" "controlling men" etc. So to me this book gives good advice for Everyone.

As a women I chose to have a small circle of friends I prefer quality to quanity. I may be nice to all these personality types but I do not want to spend a lot of time with them. And we can only hope and pray that our sons don't marry one either.

This book is written as if a friend was sharing their experiences and backed up with scripture for each category. I see many men have the same woundings and same issues. Depending on what age that you marry hopefully people grow and mature out of these habits. But studies have shown that often times people get stuck at a certain age because of childhood woundings. I have a good friend who's mother is still 13 emotionally she will forever be the center of attention and a true narcissist.

Remember ...."A son is a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter is a daughter for the rest of her life!" Having a 32 year old son and a 25 year old daughter I know first hand it's a fact. You can treat your daughter-in-law like gold but sometimes this still happens.

A MUST read for business and organizational leaders who need to understand social (aka everyone)

Once again, Mark Schaefer hits a home run!

Full disclosure to start. I have used Mark Schaefer's books with both my business clients and with my university students for the past 3 years (I teach social media marketing courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) . I'm a big fan of his work and of him.

Why am a such a big fan?

I believe the purpose of education isn't knowledge, it's action. And reading Mark's books, it's clear he subscribes to this philosophy as well. While you will learn from his books, he pushes you to act on what you learn. He helps readers get up to speed quickly by cutting out the clutter and focusing on core "need to know" information.

Just like with the Tao of Twitter, it's clear when you read Social Media Explained, that Mark is both an acclaimed educator and practitioner. Mark is able to distill research and theory into easy-to-understand and ACTIONABLE advice. He knows those in leadership positions don't have time to experiment with social media. So he gives advice and tips that are perfect for busy leaders, executives, professionals and practitioners who need to understand what social means for business and what to do with social. And, in Social Media Explained, he guides you, step-by-step through the process of moving forward with confidence.

Regarding this book, what I find particularly valuable is the structure. Like you, I'm business and I appreciate a clear, easy-to-follow outline.

Social Media Explained is divided into 4 sections. The first sections cover how social media works in business and which questions and objections you might face when putting together social media initiatives. Then Mark shares a case study that shows his concepts in action. For those readers who feel like they need a social media 101, he provides great, practical descriptions of the major social media platforms in use today.

One other feature I really appreciate about the book is each chapter ends with "Questions leaders need to consider". I love this. It's like having Mark sitting with you and asking you the KEY questions that need to be answered as you move forward.

Will this book make you a social media expert? No, there isn't one book that can do that. But what this book can do better than any other book on the market is help you get up to speed quickly so you can get your organization and team moving forward with confidence.

This book is a short, illustrative, and to the point primer that answers all of the first few questions almost every business owner, manager, or executive has before they use social media to help grow their business.

What is the ROI of social media (hint: That's the wrong question)? It's covered in detail in section 2. What media tools do I start with? In section 3, all different types of social media tools are covered.

It is NOT written for a social media consultant.

It IS written directly for managers, executives, business owners etc... and it is the first book I would recommend you read on the topic of considering social media.

About the Author
Temple Grandin is Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Dr. Grandin's work includes design of animal handling systems, research on livestock behavior, and auditing animal welfare. She has visited 26 countries and has served on the OIE animal welfare ad hoc committee for slaughter. Her previous livestock books are: Livestock Handling and Transport, Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals and Humane Livestock Handling. Her popular press books on animal behavior have been both U.S. and international bestsellers. Throughout her career, Dr. Grandin has worked to combine scientific research results with practical application in the field. In the North America half, the cattle are handled in equipment she designed for meat plants. She has received awards for her work on animal welfare from both the livestock industry and animal welfare NGO's. She has awards from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The American Meat Institute, American Society for Animal Science and the Humane Society of the U.S.

A wonderful handling book!

This book has multi-authors with numerous chapters by editor Temple Grandin. An extremely well-researched and heavily illustrated book on livestock handling and animal behavior. I learned so much about animal transport and handling from expert scientists from around the world. This would be an excellent textbook in any and all livestock handling and behavior classes!

I would suggest that any book recommended as a must have for people on the ground trying to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and practical application should not be sold for 40 to 60 dollars.

Huh? What are you Rambling on about?

I paid $150 dollars for a poor quality (images, graphs, text, tables, explanations) book. If this book had not been required for my class which required we solve the random 10-30 questions at the end of each chapter I would have sent this book back. I have no doubt that James Burke is one smart guy from his publications online but I feel the publisher Marcel Dekker put out a poor quality product and asked a lot of money for it.

If you want a real high quality distribution book, then spend your money on Electric Power Distribution System Engineering by Turan Gonen.

This is a very good book for working engineers, especially those working as distribution engineers in utilities. Many people who are in academia may not like this book because it is not about a lot of number crunching. However if you work in the utility industry as a distribution engineer, it has a wealth of important information. As a power student, I wish to delve into this material with the confidence that the author isn't publishing a book that didn't make it completely through the editing process. There are decimal errors in the examples, and the questions at the end of the chapters assume you know more than the author. As an advanced power text, careful editing and clarity is a must.

Im a yoga instructor and have to say, this book and DVD is great for a beginner, intermediate or just those looking to deepen their practice. It is a visual yoga and mechanics manual. The practitioner can see and understand what physiology is involved in each movement, and further can attain a good sense of alignment once they see what is "working" in each pose. Good purchase!

Time for Yoga

This book is great! The best part is the illustration after the photo of each pose showing which muscle groups are targeted. The written instructions may need read a second or third time to get it right on the more difficult positions, but are well-written and concise. First saw a version of this at the local library, but decided it is a must-own.

This is a nice basic yoga class. It has a chart with all positions which I taped on a board to set up during exercises. Am very pleases with this book. For folks like me over 65 yrs. old i supplement with lightweight yoga blocks to get into some of the more difficult positions they diagram.

At last something for developers

I just received this book 2 days ago and I have been devouring it ever since. As someone who makes his living developing for OCS and now Lync Server 2010 I have anxiously been waiting for this and I am not disappointed.

The chapters are well organized and things are well explained. I like the small code snippets and explanation of each control. I've downloaded the source code and I'm impressed with it too. I like source code as it is easy to copy and paste snippets into my own applications so seeing well written source excites me. Chapters progress well and allow you to build on what you have learned. At the same time the different APIs are independent so if you aren't interested in user interface and controls you can skip that and concentrate on the server side UCMA stuff.

I have both the paper and electronic versions. Yes the electronic version may be more expensive but I can't understand giving a book a bad rating just because the electronic version costs more.

In conclusion, I am recommending this book to other Lync developers.

Best book on UCMA 3.0 and Lync APIs available

I got a copy of this book and didn't have time to read it until recently. Knowledgeable in UCMA since 2.0 (as I had already developed several applications), and the other Lync APIs (MSPL, Server APIs, and Lync Controls) where I also developed several projects using them, I already had a point of comparison. I was pleasantly surprised to discovered how well written and easy it was to read this book.

George and Michael really did an excellent job explaining the concepts for how to use these APIs. Based on their recommendations, I could immediately tell they had personal experience using these APIs. This book helped enrich my development skills beyond what's available in the SDK.

I previously read many of Michael's past articles on UC Blog. So, it helped that I was familiar with his writting. So, I didn't hesitate to read his book.

It's nice to see another book on the topic of Lync APIs come after the only other book that covers the previous version of these APIs, Programming for Unified Communications with Microsoft® Office Communications Server 2007 R2. As far as I'm aware, this is the only programming book covering Lync's APIs.

I've been using George and Michael's book as reference when developing my own Lync projects. Excellent work guys!

Solid book on Lync development

Lync info is still relatively hard to come by which makes this book exceptionally useful and timely. The book is well organized and topical. George Durzi and Michael Greenlee are way ahead of the curve when it comes to Lync development. Great to see they put their know-how into print! As another reviewer pointed out, the book is chock full of examples and source code, and the sample code is very good. Don't skip the "About the Author" section...Michael Greenlee is a witty dude.
